  • No-frills Northumberland camping with views of Alnwick Castle
  • Five minutes’ drive from Alnwick Castle and 20 minutes from Cragside
  • Off-grid farm site with an honesty shop and livestock all around
Roll up all you Harry Potter fans – now you can embark on a camping adventure with views of Alnwick Castle, where so many scenes from the famous film franchise were shot. Set on a three-acre field, Heckley Farm Camping is a laidback, off-grid sort of a place, with a very limited number of spacious grass pitches on a working Northumberland farm. To the west of the field, a large beech hedge provides shelter from the prevailing westerly wind. Wherever you pitch on the field, you’ll be surrounded by wildlife; you can expect to see some of the barn owls, buzzards, hares and deer that live around the farm. The surrounding land is a mixture of cattle and arable farming, and you’re sure to meet the two pet pigs as well as some very friendly and free-range hens – you can buy their eggs for breakfast and pop the money in the site’s honesty box. As this is pretty much wild camping, there’s no electricity on site, although drinking water and well-maintained posh portable toilets are provided. You'll be allowed to park at your pitch for easy setting up too. It’s a firmly family-friendly vibe at this low-key, relaxed site; it is certainly not a spot for party animals.

Frankly, we only had a few hours to spare. We were caught in a heavy rainstorm, so we packed up the tent. Besides, there was no one else there. The place was so peaceful, beautiful, quiet, and clean. The restrooms were clean. A herd of cows were watching us from the adjacent field. I liked it here; I'll come back another day when there's no storm.

Disliked There are lots of black flies and they are sticking to you.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Friendly and welcoming host, peace and quiet, and lovely views over the hills. We went at the last night of the season which meant is was only 3 tents up, which added to the charm.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Good location near to Alnwick. Friendly atmosphere.

Disliked Pitchup description highlighted Castle views but the castle was not visible from any part of the field and photo showing castle and quad bike was misleading. Pitchup description also highlights “posh” loos, but the toilets were just the standard building site / festival loos with no lighting and not very nice at all. The site is on a very exposed location subject to prevailing winds.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Beautiful setting next to rolling fields of wheat. A small family, friendly site with basic amenities.
A warm welcome by the owners who checked in on the site daily.

The site was peaceful but fell quiet after dark.
Ideal location to visit Alnwick, Bamburgh, Holy Island and Seahouses amongst other locations.

Disliked The toilets began to smell after a couple of nights. Maybe an info poster to explain how to use the flush system then younger campers need to be shown how to use it.
