  • Small, dog-friendly and family-run farm site five miles from the beach
  • A 15-minute drive from Craster, Seahouses and Alnwick Castle
  • Large field for kids and dogs to play; pubs and restaurants nearby
Nearby Northumberland sand, stargazing and plenty of scope for coastal or country walks… what a set of attractions Doxford Farm Camping has. As a small, family-run site five miles from the nearest sandy beach, there’s a lot to like about this place – especially for those who want to stay somewhere that welcomes dogs, children and couples with open arms too. It’s all well-maintained here, and some might say quite on the luxurious side, given that the communal facilities include three large shower rooms each with a large power shower, basin, loo, mirror and hair dryer. So, feel free to dress up for any visits to the local pubs and restaurants within five to 15 minutes’ drive of the site – they sell delicious food locally sourced from the land and sea. What sort of places can you set sail to, then? Low Newton-by-the Sea beach (10 minutes’ drive) and Embleton Bay (15 minutes) are some of the closest sandy stretches. Further out, between 15 minutes and 20 minutes’ drive, are more dog-friendly beaches and coastal havens like Bamburgh, Seahouses, Craster and Beadnell Bay (and Alnwick is 15 minutes’ drive inland for attractions like a castle and a huge second-hand book shop with model trains). Back at your base, which is located on a family-run working farm, there’s heaps of space and peace for walks, stargazing or stopping to smell the large bank filled with daffodils and tulips in the spring or wildflowers and other plants in the summer. There’s a large field for kids, dogs (and any big kids) to let off steam, as well as a pot wash area with a large double sink and hot and cold water to deal with any barbecue leftovers.

Liked: Great location great pitches showers toilet block clean tidy and efficient reasonably close to beaches

Disliked: I would say didn’t like but the wash up sink could do with being a bit bigger to get your stuff in and possibly the addition of some draining equipment after you have washed up but only my opinion and would definitely not stop me staying again

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Lovely tranquil site with beautifully kept grounds and large, level pitches. Dog walk through the fields. Facilities are simple and clean.

Disliked: Not sure if owners are aware that the LH shower room temperature control is disconnected, rendering the shower unusable.

From the manager: Thank you so much for such a lovely review. No I wasn't aware of this as no other guest had mentioned it and I don't often change the temperature side when cleaning. I have popped out now and tightened it up and so all working again now, thank you for letting me know. Kind Regards, Katryna

Liked: Lovely small quiet site. 3 great shower rooms with toilet and sink, never had to queue or wait. Free showers without annoying push buttons and kept clean. Close to the A1 with easy access to Alnwick, Berwick and Bamburgh on the coast.

Liked: An amazing site with large pitches and very clean facilities.
The family are very friendly and welcoming, as well as doing amazing work to support charities and families to have quality holidays.

The site only has a few pitches, which are far bigger than normal, they could easily fit double the number of pitches on the site at least if they wanted to

Disliked: Honestly nothing we disliked, as much as I try and find something to say

Liked: Pleasant site, rural, farm complex.

Disliked: Another site where everything is controlled by email and cctv, no personal contact whatsoever.
Have to leave before 10 am but cannot arrive until after 2 pm. Very difficult to achieve if like me you are partners carer and have to get them and their companion dog ready and away by 10 am !
On second day had to endure farm children riding their quad bikes round the garden for 3 hours. Not ideal.

From the manager: Hi Anthony,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I am very sad to read some of your comments, we certainly aren’t a site ‘controlled by email and cctv’. We are a small family-run campsite and live next door, we don’t have cctv and I pop out multiple times a day onto the site, sometimes guests are there and we often chat and other times guests are out. On many occasions guests ask if they can leave later and every single time this isn’t an issue and I allow them to stay later for no extra. If you had just asked or phoned me I would of course accommodated that. As for the children, we are a farming family, and have a large field and occasionally they go on their little quad bikes when the campsite is quiet - they may have been on them for short period of time and certainly not ‘3 hours’. I’m so sorry you feel so negative about our lovely rural, little family-run site and hope you find a site in the future that better meets your needs. Kind Regards, Katryna

Local attractions

Here primarily for the sea? With sand dunes, castle ruins in the background and a view of Lindisfarne Island, Bamburgh beach (20 minutes’ drive) is a pretty good place to start. Dine on the classic Craster (15 minutes) kippers before taking a fishing trip from the harbour or head for Seahouses (15 minutes) if you fancy spending some time puffin and seal spotting on boat trips to the Farne Islands. Holy Island (35 minutes) is another island destination, accessible by car depending upon the tide, with a huge castle and priory. Compare notes with the castle in Alnwick (15 minutes), which runs re-enactments, jesting and other historical workshops. Leave enough time for an earl grey tea at Howick Hall Gardens & Arboretum (15 minutes) too – after all, the earl it’s named after once lived there. Local wedding venues include Doxford Barns (15 minutes’ walk), Charlton Hall (20 minutes), Doxford Hall Hotel and Spa (five minutes’ drive) and Newton Hall (10 minutes).
