  • Dog-friendly site on the Northumberland coast, one mile from the beach
  • In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; near the St Oswald’s Way
  • On-site bar with covered seating area; playground on site
An off-grid, no-frills, quiet and family-friendly campsite, Coast and Castles Campsite is one mile from the Northumberland coast. About 10 minutes' drive from Alnwick and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this dog-friendly site is well-situated for hunting down coves and castles on the coast with the St Oswald’s Way footpath five minutes’ drive away. And what to do first? Will it be munching on kippers in Craster (10 minutes' drive away) or swimming in the sea followed by a warming cuppa on the nearest sandy beach, five minutes’ drive away? Either way, you’ll be in a good place to build up a solid itinerary on the Northumberland coast and then return to the site for a chilled drink at the covered seating area in the on-site bar. With a play area on site too, kids will have their own places to run off any extra energy before the end of the day. And if all that gets you breaking a sweat, there’s a handy amenities block to freshen up. Now for a bite to eat… while you’re out and about, there’s a restaurant beside the bay in Boulmer, five minutes’ drive away, and a couple of cafés in Longhouton, five minutes’ drive away in the opposite direction. There’s a food shop here too, handy for picking up bits and bobs for a chilled-out barbecue back on site.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite (family)

Liked I really like the location of coast and castles. It allows us to pitch up and explore whether it was via the van or walking or with the bikes and in the evening it was great to come back knowing that the gent would be open for a swift half plenty of space and a small park which was on site, which was helpful to keep the kids entertained

Disliked There isn’t much to dislike here and it all depends on the person, but for us it was perfect

A really good site, nice facilities and bar and pizza when required.…

Powered grass and gravel campervan campsite

Liked Absolutely loved our stay here. The whole site has such a laidback, peaceful feel—super clean and really well looked after. The facilities were spot on, and the bar and café added a lovely social touch without being too busy. Best of all, it’s just a scenic 30-minute stroll to the beach. Perfect for a chilled getaway!

Disliked Check out times too early being 10:30am. Up early and mad rush to pack up the campervan and dispose of our chemical waste.

Perfect place to stay while you explore beautiful Northumberland.

Primitive grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite (family)

Liked Lovely little campsite with a rustic theme. On-site bar and food outlet, with visiting food outlets. Toilets, showers, clean up areas and plenty of space. Close enough to walk to a beach and a big town close by.

Disliked Kept nutting the door in the toilet when standing from sitting. Showers could have individual heating controls.

Local attractions

Set your compass towards the sea… whether it’s walking and cycling around Seaton Point (10 minutes’ drive), watersports down at Alnmouth beach (10 minutes) or dipping in and out of the sand dunes at Warkworth beach (15 minutes), there are plenty of coastal landscapes to choose from around here. As for the beach towns, Craster (15 minutes) is all about the kippers and art galleries. If you plan ahead, you could book a fishing trip from the harbour – or make a day of it and check out the National Trust’s Dunstanburgh Castle (15 minutes) nearby to see what life used to be like in the 14th-century fortress. Another commanding castle resides in Alnwick (10 minutes), but this town is also a sure bet for browsing bookshelves in the bookshops, ambling around gardens or rolling onto the steam railway. Those of you who fancy another beach day might want to go to its sandy shore or continue the coastal party in Amble (20 minutes), where beach huts, fish shacks, canoeing, kayaking and boating make for a classic day out.
