  • Family-run site at Scaling in the North York Moors National Park
  • A 20-minute drive to Whitby; 25 minutes to Roseberry Topping
  • Well-equipped kitchen hut on site; barbecues and outdoor games to hire
With the landscapes of the North York Moors National Park all around and the coastline only about 10 minutes’ drive away, this is a nifty location for a North Yorkshire outdoor break. Clover Hill Farm is a family-run site in the hamlet of Scaling, up at the northern end of the national park about 20 minutes’ drive from Whitby. That location means there are plenty of options around for activities and days out, with hiking/cycle trails galore nearby, plus outings to beaches and seaside towns. And you won’t have to travel far to get your scenery/activity fix, as a 15-minute walk gets you to the waterfall at Roxby Mill. Alternatively, a five-minute stroll takes you to Scaling Reservoir for fishing, walks and watersports (or a game of crazy golf and a good meal at the waterside pub). Tailoring your break to your style is easy here – you can keep things simple or boost your break with various extras like barbecue hire, prosecco buckets and birthday banners. On arrival you can also sort things like local barbecue meat packs and outdoor games hire (giant Jenga, supersized Twister, that sort of thing…) Guest facilities centre around a shepherd’s hut washroom (with hot showers and flushing toilets) and a well-equipped kitchen hut with a mini oven, double hob, microwave, fridges and various pots, pans and utensils. Outside, there’s a large mowed area for games or for groups to gather. The folk that own this site are passionate about the environment, so they’ve made a concerted effort to plant new trees and hedging to create wildlife corridors and enhance the site’s biodiversity. Owl and bat boxes on site mean you may well see and/or hear these species at some point during your stay.

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked Top rate facilities, great showers, clean toilets, kitchen and an honesty shop with essentials. Plus logs to buy for fires. Nice smallish site, all tents and bell tents, no caravans. One of the best I’ve visited. Plenty of space between tents. It’s all very well thought-through.

Disliked Almost nothing to fault it, just the strong farm manure smell a couple of times. But it’s on a farm so not a surprise.

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked Pitch sizes are great and surrounding by long grass for a bit of privacy. Large communal grass space. Very clean communal areas and a small onsite shop.
Liked that cars weren’t next to the tents as it felt safer for the children playing as no cars moving about.

Disliked Larger carts would be beneficial but we managed.

Circus gypsy wagon

Liked The circus wagon was clean, comfortable, and had everything we needed for a 2 night stay. Don't be too put off by the shorter bed - at 5ft9 and 6ft3, we managed fine for a couple of nights! The overall site was well maintained and the shared kitchen and bathroom facilities were excellent. Had a great weekend!

Disliked Wagon could use ventilation - got quite hot and stuffy.

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked Everything! Overall it was a fantastic site with everything you needed, the showers and toilets were clean, excellent kitchen facilities with 2 fridges, sinks and a cooking area with utensils.
Lovely little shop that was well stocked if you needed it and wheel barrows to take your stuff from your car to the pitch.

Disliked There was nothing we disliked during the trip and all our needs were met, we stayed on pitch one so getting our stuff from the car to our pitch was easy but if we were further away it would have been a pain but nothing we wouldn't have managed and it wouldn't put us off staying again.
There are only 2 toilets and showers, again this wasn't an issue for us and we never has to wait but just something to be mindful of.

Hazel bell tent (four person)

Liked We went to clover hill farm with two other families and had a great time.
The bell tents were spacious, comfortable and everything you need was provided.
It was a little cold in the evening but the log burning fire was a real treat and warmed the tent quickly.
The communal kitchen and shower room/toilet was very clean.
There is also an honesty box (old horse box) that was a great addition and the prices were not inflated.
Wood for the stove is also sold and at a better price than the local garage.
Lots of room for the kids to run around and pitches well spaced out.
Will definitely return to this site.

Local attractions

There’s a whole lot of choice around here when it comes to walks and bike rides – and as the farm is on a public right of way, you can get started straight from the gate. Some of the top spots nearby include Blakey Ridge (20 minutes’ drive), Roseberry Topping (25 minutes) and the Hole of Horcum (half an hour). Not up for the exercise? Ride the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Goathland (25 minutes). The national park stretches all the way to the coast, taking in seaside towns like Runswick Bay (10 minutes), Staithes (15 minutes) and Robin Hood’s Bay (half an hour). Saltburn-by-the-Sea (20 minutes) is another popular spot, with a lovely beach, a pier and a funicular railway to ride. The highlight for many, though, is a trip to Whitby (20 minutes), where you can stroll through the Old Town, climb the famed 199 Steps and visit the abbey, as well as spending time on the beach.
