  • Small, peaceful and traditional site on a working Yorkshire Dales farm
  • A 25-minute drive from Barnard Castle; 10 minutes from bicycle hire
  • Two pubs within walking distance; off-ground barbecues permitted
Taking some time out in the Yorkshire Dales National Park? A scoop of peace, a dash of rural scenery and a nice sprinkle of walking trails are some of the ingredients at Pepper Hall Campsite in Arkengarthdale. This small, traditional site has a tasty stay on a working farm in the national park, 25 minutes’ drive away from Barnard Castle. This is a scenic spot with Swaledale sheep and beef cattle surrounding the site and walks straight from the site, either up onto the traditional Grouse moor or down into the valley bottom along the Arkle beck. Cycling is another popular pastime here, as there’s bicycle hire for the dales 10 minutes’ drive away. To get to the site, you’ll have to cross over a shallow ford with a small stream on foot, using the stepping stones. There’s a private running water supply on site, and aside from that, there's a toilet a short walk away from the camping pitches. You also have permission to set up an off-ground barbecue (as long as it's not too hot, dry or windy). Traditional ales and good food may be your first port of call. Handily, Langthwaite village is well-known for its pub five minutes’ walk away, which was rebuilt after floods and now has some great grub and drinks. There’s another pub 15 minutes’ walk away with a warm welcome and food. There are a couple more cheery towns or villages around, including Reeth (10 minutes’ drive for a shop, playground and museum) and Richmond (a historic town, half an hour away).

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Ideal back-to-basics hikers' campsite, exactly as described. Cheryl, the owner, got in touch after booking with clear instructions for the location and how to access the site, and shortly after arrival, came and said hello, told us about the area, and advised us on footpaths and the options for getting to the two local pubs.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Beautiful setting around the Yorkshire dales. Basic toilet/basin a short walk down the track. You have to drive over a little stream to get to the campsite. The weather was red hot when we were there so it was lovely to have a little paddle and cool down our dog! Staff were very friendly and greeted us on arrival. There are two pubs a very short walk away. The red lion and CB inn which were great to visit also. We will definitely be returning to this campsite!

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked Beautifully remote, barebones facilities (little more than a field on the edge of moorland), lovely friendly, chatty farmer - learnt loads about farming life in the Dales :-)

An excellent pub with great beer, great food and a pool table a short walk away!

Disliked Nothing
