  • Quiet site with fishing lake on the outskirts of York
  • North Yorkshire Moors National Park and coast within an hour's drive
  • A 15-minute drive to York's museums, minster and shops
Wag your tails for this fab spot with a fishing lake: if you’re a fan of the art of waiting patiently for a bite by the waters, Wagtail Park in North Yorkshire will be a top berth for you. Its 10 acres of landscaped parklands include an angling lake stuffed with carp and perch, bream, roach and tench, and there are two tackle shops within a 10-minute drive. The other variety of wagging tail is welcome too, with dog-walking areas set aside around the site. For a break from fishing, the city of York is 15 minutes' drive away for tours of the medieval town, visits to the Jorvik Viking Centre and National Railway Museum and the Minster, as well as practical things like shops, pubs and innumerable places to eat. Attractions on the peripheries of York are easy to reach as well, such as the Yorkshire Air Museum (10 minutes) and 18th-century Beningborough Hall (20 minutes). The coast is around an hour’s drive away, and in between it and the site lie the 1500-odd square kilometres of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Get a taste as well as a trip back in time on the North Yorkshire Moors steam railway from Pickering (half an hour) to Whitby. Wagtail Park is fully accessible for disabled guests, with spacious wetroom showers; underfloor heating in the washrooms is a bonus appreciated by many, especially through the chillier months.

Liked Clean, quiet, extremely well cared for and maintained. Friendly owners. Large pitches - very flat and well maintained. Toilet and shower block always spotlessly clean, cute fairy lighting around the grounds make it really pretty at night.

Liked We've been camping for many years now and we've been to some really nice sites but Wagtail Park completely raised the bar and has set new standards for us!

The site is absolutely immaculate, manicured infact! There was no litter anywhere and there is a well signed area for recycling.

The shower and toilet block was clean and tidy and I never had to wait for a shower.

The fishing lake was superb and we caught a variety of coarse fish. The fish were all in absolutely pristine condition and it was lovely to see.

And then there is the owner, Peter. Wow, he really understands customer service and customer experience! He was there to greet us and gave us the most informative talk on the local knowledge and the "do's and don't's" in the local area. Peter came round during our stay to make sure everything was ok and you just knew that if there was a problem he'd sort it. It's sad to say that not many people or businesses understand customer service these day's but Peter goes out of his way to deliver what I call good, old fashioned customer service. If you watch him during the day he works tirelessly ensuring the park is kept immaculate and it really shows.

I would have absolutely no hesitation in booking Wagtail Park again and it's not very often that I want to return to a campsite. Not necessarily because they are bad but because I like trying new places, Wagtail Park however, I will be back!

Incredible site, so peaceful, you will not be disappointed!

Power optional grass travel trailer campsite

Liked The fishing. Really good. Peaceful and well kept site with friendly and very helpful owners.

Disliked Electricity very expensive £7 pounds per day. That would be £210 per month. I thought you could only charge for electricity the price you paid for it.

Power optional grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Such a great location. I stayed here with my 13 yr old while visiting York. This place is a little oasis of calm & nature to return to after a hectic day of site seeing. Campsite very clean and well maintained. Peter was super helpful & accommodating and a great source of local knowledge. Wish we’d have booked longer, there are many more places of interest nearby.

Power optional grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Peter the site owner is very helpful with directions . He is very knowledgeable about the area and likes to ensure you have information on the where to visit .
The site is situated about 5 miles from York we used Uber on several occasions who were very reasonable for days out to town and the racecourse.
There is a friendly working man's club near by in Huntington for those who like a game of bingo or live entertainment.
The site is very quiet and peaceful . The shower block was always clean .

Local attractions

If you’re fired up for walking more through this fab area of moors and heaths, take another railway trail: the tracks and engines have gone from the Goathland (50 minutes' drive) to Grosmont route, leaving a footpath for scenic strolls. The wider park is laced with trails of all lengths, taking walkers to landmarks like the White Horse hill carving at Kilburn, 40 minutes away, and the crags of Roseberry Topping, dubbed the Yorkshire Matterhorn. The views and emptiness of this area are endlessly impressive; for a contrast, see what humans can do with a trip round the Baroque splendour of Castle Howard (20 minutes). You can easily spend a day exploring the lakes and fountains, woodlands and walled gardens of this mighty estate even before you set foot inside the house. Over the moors, the sea beckons with Whitby an hour away for coastal walks, seal-spotting boat cruises and fishing trips as well as a museum devoted to its number-one son Captain Cook… and of course the ruined abbey that inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula. At a similar distance and justifiably proud of its clifftop location, Scarborough draws visitors for its castle and beach, the traditional amusements of Luna Park fairground and the marine wonders of the SEA LIFE aquarium.
