Hedging around the caravan site

  • Small family-run caravan site at a North Yorkshire golf course
  • York city centre 15 minutes' drive; designer shopping outlet 10 mins
  • Bar, woodland walks and several golf options on site
Woodland walks on one side, a golf course on the other and an on-site clubhouse serving up tasty snacks and drinks to get you through whatever activity you’ve chosen for that day – now doesn’t that sound just a little bit fabulous? This is the setup at Swallow Hall, a small family-run caravan site in the North Yorkshire countryside, a couple of miles from the village of Wheldrake and six miles from the centre of York. This place is something of a dream for golfing types – it's inside the grounds of Swallow Hall Golf Course, which has a pay-and-play 18-hole facility that doesn’t require any tee time booking. Guests also have the option of playing on the 9-hole Academy course (par 28), honing their skills at the short game area or extending the day with some time on the floodlit driving range. The on-site golf clubhouse, The Roost, serves soft and alcoholic drinks as well as a selection of sweet and savoury snacks. (It doesn't serve meals, but Wheldrake, five minutes' drive away, has a pub and a small shop for your other sustenance needs.) For activities that don't involve golfing, there's direct access to Forestry Commission woodland walks from the site, or you may prefer to get out for a day of retail therapy at the Designer Outlet York, 10 minutes’ drive away.

What customers say

This quiet, well-kept campground has roomy, level sites and great, modern restrooms. It's perfectly located for visiting York via park and ride, woodland walks, and features an on-site golf course. Guests loved the cleanliness, peaceful vibe, and friendly owners, often wanting to return. Minor drawbacks included no Wi-Fi, limited clubhouse dining, and infrequent local buses.

Liked Absolutely lovely campsite. We were informed by email before our visit that the chef had left unexpectedly so unfortunately there were no meals but snacks and sandwich’s were available. We decided that it wouldn’t affect our trip away and planned accordingly. We visited the club house for drinks and sat outside as we had our dog, it had been raining so the owner kindly came out and dried the seating area for us which I thought was really kind.
The campsite is immaculate, the showers and toilets too, the showers have really good water pressure and didn’t have a button to press each time (as a women with long hair, is annoying) also the shower head comes off which I prefer.
The plots are big, lovely for a family with kids that want to play on the grass.
There is a wooded area which is lovely to walk the dog which leads into a small village with a lively community centre which has a bar, the locals are lovely and really friendly.
The campsite is an hour from Filey which was lovely as we went to the food festival. My husband decided that he wanted to play golf on our departures day so I emailed and they got straight back to me and changed our departure time to 4:30 free of charge as my husband was playing golf.
I have stayed on several campsites and this is one of my favourites, I will definitely be returning in the near future.
Thank you for a lovely stay.

Disliked There are only 2 showers but I would rather have quality over quantity, I would much rather wait for a decent shower than get in a dirty one that doesn’t work properly.

Not a reflection on the campsite but something to keep in mind, our internet did not work whilst we were there, my sister in laws did so it depends which network you are on, we are all o2. This just meant we had to speak to each other all weekend and enjoy some family time.

Local attractions

When you’re not playing golf on site (or perhaps while your other half is on the course), there are plenty of outings to be had in the surrounding area. If you’d like to soak up some more of the local scenery, you could settle in for some coarse fishing at Raker Lakes (five minutes’ drive), stroll around the various themed areas of Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens (15 minutes) or stretch your legs on a walk at Skipwith Common National Nature Reserve (20 minutes). City time is right on hand too, and in the wonderful place that is York (15 minutes), where you could easily spend several days exploring the minster, the Shambles, the National Railways Museum and the city walls, or taking boat trips and riverside walks. And that’s before you’ve splashed the cash at Designer Outlet York (10 minutes). For different days out, plan trips to the Yorkshire Air Museum and Allied Air Forces Memorial (15 minutes), Selby Abbey (20 minutes) or York Bird of Prey Centre (half an hour).
