  • Scenic and well-maintained site less than a mile from Bolton Abbey
  • Skipton and Ilkley 15 minutes' drive; half an hour to Grassington
  • Coffee shop and kitchen on site; farm park and pub a short walk
A gorgeous Yorkshire Dales location, spectacular views, top-notch facilities and heaps to do nearby – it’s no wonder Catgill Farm has become a firm favourite with customers. And it’s also no wonder that it’s been named by a national newspaper as one of the country’s coolest campsites… The setting here is special indeed, on a family-run farm just under a mile from the town of Bolton Abbey. It’s the kind of place where you can craft exactly the kind of break you’d like, be that an active one filled with hikes and action-packed days out or a more leisurely one spent putting your feet up on site and then perhaps strolling over to the local pub. It’s also the kind of place where you won’t need to rely on your car all the time – set out on foot and you can reach Bolton Abbey in about 15 minutes for the famous 12th-century priory ruins, stepping stones across the River Wharfe and a sandy beach for paddling. Hesketh Farm Park is just across the road, or you could take a walk over the hill to Bolton Abbey Steam Railway. There are several places to eat within easy walking distance too, including a smart pub (10 minutes away across the fields) and an American diner that does excellent breakfasts, waffles and homemade ice cream. Not that you have to go that far for a feed – the site has its own coffee shop where you can set the day up well with a coffee and a croissant. Other facilities are just as excellent, including a high-quality bathroom block and a kitchen with washing-up area, charging points and three shared fridge-freezers. You’ll also be able to hire a firepit for a cosy campfire evening.

What customers say

Great campsite with superb, clean facilities, praised for its beautiful location & friendly staff. Enjoyed the cafe, pizza, spacious pitches, and Bolton Abbey proximity. Some noted sloping pitches and costly extra parking. A few reported noise/security issues and unseasonably wet weather.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked characterful site in lovely location. Very clean and orderly. We were off-season and it was quiet which was fine. Many fine local attractions.

Disliked had an issue locating level non-electric sites but that's due to being on a hillside.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Firstly the emails to provide information on where to eat and visit was a nice touch.

On arrival, the staff were really friendly and happy to help. Provided a map and opening hours for the on site facilities.

Travelled down to find a nice non electric pitch.

Facilities are really good, shop and cafe on site are very good. Toilets are really clean and seemed to be kept that way.

Really good location, walked down to Bolton Abbey from the site and clocked up around 10km around that area. Which was a lovely place and had a lot for kids!

Disliked I did pay extra for a larger pitch, however not sure what the extra payment got me as I just ended up being told to find my own pitch in any with available spaces.

There was a drone that was flown over in the late afternoon/early evening. Which was a little odd and it stayed over some of the tents for periods of time, felt a little intrusive. However, not sure if this was something to do with the site or someone staying there.

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite (large)

Liked Very pretty campsite . Quiet and relaxing . The wooden games and park were great for the kids. We all loved the alpacas and we were asked if we wanted to go into the pen with them. The showers were great in the shower block. Cats kitchen looked great and if we had stayed longer we would definitely have a pizza ! Great to be able to walk to Bolton Abbey and The Devonshire Arms!

Disliked Could have done with a stool or shelf in the shower cubicle to place bags/ items onto. There were plenty of pegs however ,it was just slightly difficult to hang everything up.

Powered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent campsite

Liked Good, modern, clean facilities that were cleaned on a very regular basis. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. The shop was also hand and stocked lots of items, and the pot wash had two big fridge freezers and a microwave available

Disliked I booked Catgill Farm as the Pitchup description said it had Wi-Fi, but it does not!! I could get no signal at all from the tent field and only a very weak signal near the buildings at the top of the field, which was too weak for my phone to pick up. It is also not stated that the field is very steep, especially towards the top. I recently started suffering from sciatica, and I had a plot right at the very bottom of the field. If I had known it was so steep, I would have requested a pitch higher up the field. You cannot park your car next to the pitch, and the car park is even higher up than the tent field. The pitches are also made up of sand & gravel, which constantly gets walked into the tent, meaning the floor was always dirty, especially when it rained. I even ended up leaving a day early due to all of the above.

Liked Good family friendly site. Pizzas good. Lovely staff.

Disliked Fire pits. They were everywhere, and our tent and everything stunk when we got home. What made this really sad, is the drought and the number of wildfires in the area. Not responsible imo. Also, music on in toilet block all night. And lights on bright all night. Maybe they could be dimmed during quiet hours?
Only 2 toilets out of 4 open.

Local attractions

Once you’ve warmed up with a few local walks, there are plenty more to tackle, including the long-distance Dales Way and routes around Malham (half an hour’s drive) including those to Malham Cove and Janet’s Foss. Several local villages and towns are good for a stroll too, including Skipton, where you can visit the castle and take a boat trip, or Ilkley, where you can follow up a walk to the Cow and Calf rocks with a dip in the river and a cake from Betty’s Tea Rooms. Both towns are about 15 minutes away. Addingham (10 minutes), Burnsall (15 minutes) and Grassington (half an hour) are other good options nearby.

If you need to entertain the kids, Hesketh Farm Park (five minutes’ walk) is the place to start, with tractor tours, a straw maze and animals to meet. They may also rather enjoy the Oldest Sweet Shop in the World (half an hour’s drive) or a ride on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway (five minutes), especially if it’s a day when Thomas the Tank Engine is in town.
