  • Family-run park on the cliffs overlooking Runswick Bay beach
  • A 15-minute drive to Whitby; half an hour to Robin Hood's Bay
  • A short walk to the dog-friendly beach; adjacent to Cleveland Way
A break by the fabulous North Yorkshire coastline is always a good idea – and arguably even better when you manage to steer clear of the crowds and find yourself a quiet little tucked-away spot to stay in instead. That spot could well be Runswick Bay Caravan Park, a peaceful family-owned spot up on the cliffs overlooking the beach at Runswick Bay. Ever-popular Whitby is about 15 minutes’ drive south, so you’ll be able to visit it (and many other coastal hotspots) easily enough, but here it's all about the peace and quiet. Runswick Bay may not be on many visitors’ radar but it’s a lovely little spot with a dog-friendly sandy beach (with rockpools that kids often love) and a village that’s got a pub and café among its cluster of seaside cottages. You can stroll down to the beach in a few minutes from the park – but there’s also plenty of space on site for kids to play in the woods or ride bikes in the open spaces. In fact, everything has been nicely set up for easy family holidays here – the pitches are surrounded by trees to shelter them from coastal breezes, and there’s a good collection of shared facilities including a launderette, a washing-up area, a chemical disposal point and bathrooms with disabled access. There are lots of lovely walks to be done along this stretch of coastline – but those of you with more challenging hikes in mind may like to note that this park is on the route of the 110-mile Cleveland Way, and on the northern edge of the North York Moors National Park.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely small campsite, very close to the beach and Cleveland Way - we walked to Staithes and got the bus back. Also, lovely pub next to the campsite if you don’t want to cook.
The site was very quiet at night.
We’ll be back!

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great location - Short (steep!) walk down to the beach, and right on the Cleveland way plus a bus stop nearby for trips to nearby seaside towns. Only stayed for one night so didn't use all facilities but the toilet and shower block were good and probably the cleanest I've seen on a campsite! Nice and easy check-in on the day.

Disliked Quite a few family groups with children. Not a complaint. I had absolutely no issues at all (no late noise, etc) and to be expected as in school holidays, but may not suit those looking for a more peaceful site.

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked It was a nice flat camping field with easy access to the toilet and shower block. The facilities were always clean when I used them and to say how many people were using them, that says a lot.
Washing up area with washing/ tumble dryers also clean.
Nice atmosphere.
Dog friendly.
Literally next door to the pub and the top of the very steep hill down to the beach.

Disliked Showers weren't quite warm enough - not freezing cold but definitely bracing.

From the manager: Thankyou for your review, if you would of mentioned the water temperature we could of checked for you, sometimes it clicks into eco mode,

Runswick Retreat 2 bedroom mobile home

Liked We stopped in a lovely lodge with hot tub was a mistake when we arrived as the caravan we was stopping in was unavailable and was told it should of been cancelled we had no notification off this we had travelled 3 hrs so was very worried as to where we would be stopping but the lovely couple that run the site quickly got on phone and sorted a lodge out with no added cost with added bonus of a hot tube which the children loved.

Disliked The shock of being told your booking should of been cancelled as they have no caravans. Which was down to
3 party booking system
But was sorted very quickly and a upgrade

From the manager: So pleased that it all worked well in the end, apoligies for the upset, but pleased it all worked out and you all enjoyed your stay in our lodge with hottub,
thankyou caroline

Liked The peace x quiet, the views across the bay, the pub a 2 min walk away through the field gate, that Runswick bay is literally 2 mins away in the car, lots of local pubs nearby to eat, the washing facilities were great plus Jim was very friendly. We’ve already booked back for Aug BH weekend

Disliked Nothing apart from the showers werent quite hot enough

Primitive grass campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Flat site with good ,well kept facilities. It was surprisingly quiet mid week, and easy to watch the small children go to fetch water or wash up. The camping field was only open for July and August due to planning constraints, but was at the side of the site close to the pub and the path down to the beach. The Cleveland way was adjacent so routine dog exercising was easy.

Local attractions

Getting out for a walk is a good idea here – either along the coast or out into the moors (Falling Foss waterfall, 25 minutes’ drive away, is a good place to aim for). For other fresh-air activities, you could go surfing in Saltburn-by-the-Sea (25 minutes' drive), follow the bike trails through Dalby Forest (45 minutes) or climb into the trees at Go Ape Dalby (45 minutes). Whitby (15 minutes) is a must-visit, of course – to walk the 199 Steps, visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum and follow in Dracula’s footsteps at Whitby Abbey. A little way south, Robin Hood’s Bay (half an hour) is also a great place to take a stroll, with fossil hunts and ghost walks as well as National Trust - The Old Coastguard Station to explore. More seaside time? How about a day out in Scarborough (45 minutes), with its Sea Life Centre, open-air theatre and Alpamare UK waterpark? Alternatively, mix up coast and moorland scenery with a heritage ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Whitby to Pickering.
