  • Private use of a family-friendly bell tent in Ryedale
  • A 15-minute drive from walks on the North Yorkshire Moors
  • Visit the local pub a mile away away or cook on the firepit provided
Who’s to turn down private use of a well-maintained family-run glamping site on a working farm in Ryedale? That’s let alone one that’s five minutes’ drive away from the family-friendly Flamingo Land Resort and 15 minutes from the North Yorkshire Moors for all sorts of family walks. At your disposal at Riverfield Glamping is plenty of room to relax, play ball games or cook over the firepit provided. No need to sacrifice any comfort here, as the five-metre bell tent has a double bed with a mattress for a comfy sleep and two futon beds for the kids. There’s an eco toilet, a shower unit and a firepit and barbecue to complete the set-up. If a little drizzle strikes, the site has already set up a four and a half-metre shelter where the family can continue their big cook-up (or tuck into food picked up from the local pub). That local pub is just a couple of minutes' drive away and serves fab food to eat in or takeaway (just note you’ll need to order it in advance in that case). Another splendid alternative is to hot step it to a local market town. Pickering (15 minutes’ drive) is a lively place with a castle. Kirkbymoorside (10 minutes), mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book, is fondly known as the gateway to the moors. Then, there’s the ‘food capital of the north,’ Malton, with its small museum and quality gelato. Back at base, the next field over is home to the site’s sheep and ponies. Food’s available for a small charge if you’d like to have a go at feeding the animals. No dogs are allowed. There’s parking next to the unit, but just note that it’s tricky to navigate so the site has provided an allocated parking space at the farm on the other side of the road (so take care crossing over).

The Jacob bell tent

Liked: We had a lovely stay at Riverfield. It is ideal for a young family, my 2 boys (5 and 3) absolutely loved it. Gemma met us with a warm welcome and sent a very comprehensive email before our stay about the equipment on site and what we needed. The site was very well equipped and clean. We all had a comfortable nights sleep and the horses we great company in the morning.

The Jacob bell tent

Liked: Mother and daughter (10 year old) glamping trip - what a fabulous find this was! The host, Gemma, sent me a comprehensive list of everything provided and what we needed to bring, which was basically food, toiletries and towels, and also sent me extra information about local attractions that I'd been looking for. The location was easy to find using Google maps, Gemma met us there and showed us around - everything was switched on and ready to go. The bell tent and loo/shower were immaculate, with lovely little touches like the bunting and sheep theme. Even in the slightly damp weather we managed to get the firepit going once the rain stopped and a fab time toasting marshmallows and talking to the horses and sheep in the next field that kept coming to see us in the dark! The shower was powerful and warm, bed was comfortable and we had a lovely nights sleep - you can hear the odd car passing through the night but nothing that woke us up after a day of walking and fresh air. Breakfast using the camping stove in the morning and enjoyed a quick game of frisbee and sitting in the sun a bit before leaving. Well recommended especially if you have younger children as the paddock is private and securely gated so they can run around. Definitely be back for longer next time as we also found other places nearby we want to visit.
