  • Helmsley and Rievaulx Abbey 10 minutes' drive; 40 minutes to York
  • Well-kept amenities including washing-up facilities and laundry area
Planning to nest in the North York Moors National Park for a while? If you like a small, peaceful place to stay, take a look at Wrens of Ryedale Touring Park, on the southern edge of the national park within a short drive of both Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley. This is a quiet location for a break, and it’s also easy to get to, as it’s only a little way off the A170. That handy main road also means that it’s simple enough to get out and about, whether you’re heading into the national park for hikes and other outdoor activities or escaping to the east for a day at the seaside (Scarborough is about 45 minutes’ drive away). You could also spend your days pottering around lovely market towns like Pickering (20 minutes' drive) and Thirsk (25 minutes) or exploring York's ancient city centre, which can be reached by road in about 40 minutes. Run as a family business, this friendly site is set among well-kept gardens and has some well-maintained amenities, including outdoor washing-up facilities and a handy laundry area. Well-behaved dogs are allowed to come and stay here throughout the season, and barbecues are allowed as well. A pub and Indian restaurant/takeaway are at the end of the lane, about half a mile away, for when you’d rather eat out.

Liked The showers and toilets literally couldn’t have been cleaner.
The showers are as good as home and free.
The WiFi that we said we wouldn’t use, we used and was great.
The caretakers are lovely, welcoming and helpful.
There’s a bus from the Main Street, maybe a 15 minute walk. Takes you into Helmsley, or Scarborough, York etc.
there’s a lovely bar next door which is part of a spa site. It’s expensive but lovely. Or near the bus stop, there’s a local
Pub, proper pub food, cheaper drinks and often live music on a weekend.
When we turned up and saw the pitch was out the front of the house we were a bit nervous, but you’d never know. The pitch size was well big enough for our 3 bedroom tent and outside table etc.

We will definitely be back.

Liked friendly owner welcomed us on site and offered us a hard standing rather than grass as a lot of rain was expected.
The site is clean with good facilities and we enjoyed our stay. As it is not too far from where we live we will probably come again, thank you.

Disliked Nothing

A very quiet site with close access to the surrounding area.

Liked Excellent shower block, extremely clean. Had a nice welcome from Geoff. He showed me to my pitch and showed me were everything was.
Only a short walk to the village and the pub. Public transport available in village.

Disliked Paving slabs at the pitch could do with replacing.

All round excellence.

Liked Friendly greeting and directed to a nice quiet pitch . Location was perfect for a couple of days chilling out . Approx
15 mins to walk into Beadlam .. toilet block was spotless as was the washing up facilities with plenty of hot water .. pity about the cold shower …. WiFi just didn’t work but never bothered us as we just wanted to escape social media

Disliked Waited 20 mins for the water in shower to get warm.. it never did and it just trickled out .. disappointed! That’s only complaint otherwise it was perfect

Clean, well run, peaceful, private, level, we enjoyed our stay

Liked Paul, the host was very friendly and accommodating. Peaceful stay in a lovely location

Disliked Showers were a bit “hit and miss” but didn’t detract from the stay. The shower blocks were very clean, just the temperature and spray pattern were not ideal…. That’s all. Didn’t see this as a negative though.

Exactly what we like. Very peaceful with good facilities.

Liked Piece and quite.

Disliked It's a shame that the hardstanding pitches have a lot of broken slabs. It would be better to remove the slabs and replace with gravel.

Clean quiet site in a good location but pitches too small for us.

Liked Location very good and a short walk to the village pub which serves nice food and is dog friendly. Helmsley was lovely. Very good dog walking field for our young dog to have a run. Friendly owner, quiet site and very clean toilet and shower facilities. We didn’t use it, but there’s a bus service to Helmsley and kirbymoorside and beyond with just a short walk to the bus stop.

Disliked The pitches were very tight and felt like they were in the owner’s front garden right up against his house. The site was full when we were there so we were all up against each other with hardly any space in between units. We had our small awning with us but our larger one wouldn’t have fitted in.
On the first night the water in the shower was lukewarm but a bit better the next night.

Local attractions

The North York Moors National Park is packed with options for hikes, bike rides and other outdoor activities among gorgeous landscapes. If you're not feeling all that active, you don’t have to feel left out – just book in a ride on the North Yorkshire Moore Railway from Pickering (20 minutes’ drive); services run to places like Goathland (famed for its appearance in the Harry Potter films) and Whitby. For easy days out, you could also stroll around local historic buildings and estates like Duncombe Park (10 minutes), Rievaulx Abbey (10 minutes) and Castle Howard (20 minutes) or seek out ancient remains at Cawthorn Roman Camp (20 minutes). York (40 minutes) is always a great idea for a day trip – perhaps to walk the city walls, take a boat trip on the River Ouse or visit the Jorvik Viking Centre and National Railway Museum. If you like your days out to be more about animals and adrenaline rides, aim instead for the theme park and zoo at Flamingo Land Resort (20 minutes).
