  • Small, quiet glampsite on the edge of North York Moors National Park
  • On the Coast to Coast and Cleveland Way walks
  • Fitted kitchen and ensuite bathroom in each unit
If you’re planning a walking holiday in the North Yorkshire Moors – but without forsaking comfort and luxury – Clay Bank Huts might just be the spot for you. The accommodation at this family- and dog-friendly glampsite site on the fringes of the national park has splendid views of the surrounding woodlands and moorlands. Features in each unit include double glazing, plus an ensuite bathroom. There’s also a fitted kitchen with a hob, microwave oven and fridge freezer for guests who are keen to cook; you can stock up on provisions in the market town of Stokesley (15 minutes’ drive). Anyone else can take a five-minute drive into the village of Great Broughton, where a couple of pubs serve traditional meals as well as real ales. Back at the site, on clear evenings, you might want to grab a blanket (and a hot drink) and take in the awe-inspiring spectacles of the sunset and the starry sky from the decking. Cloudy weather curtailing your stargazing activities? Then the range of board games inside your unit should keep you entertained for a few hours before bed. As well as being within a short driving distance of trails like the challenging Ingleby Incline (20 minutes) and the Coast to Coast Walk (half an hour), you’re only a half-hour drive away from Saltburn-by-the-Sea and other beaches on the North Sea coast, so don’t forget your surfboard.

Local attractions

Captain James Cook grew up in nearby Great Ayton (15 minutes’ drive), and a heritage trail takes in a sculpture of the 18th-century explorer and the site of his boyhood home. The cottage is no longer there (it was moved brick by brick to Australia), but there is a memorial garden. East of the village, Captain Cook's Monument is an obelisk dominating Easby Moor. Wander through the well-preserved remains of a 14th-century Carthusian monastery at Mount Grace Priory, House and Gardens (25 minutes), then check out the Arts and Crafts decor in the elegant manor house (including an original carpet by William Morris). If Great Ayton has merely whetted your appetite for all things Captain Cook, head to Whitby (50 minutes), where the Captain Cook Memorial Museum displays letters, paintings and other artefacts in the house where he lodged. The seaside town is also known for the ruins of its medieval abbey, which are said to have inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula.

Willow 1 bedroom camping pod

Liked: Amazing little pod, felt like home from home with a lovely setting. We had the best night sleep we've had in months and that is no lie. We will definitely be back. The hosts were fantastic and show a keen interest in the guests, they even brought us milk for a brew.

Roseberry shepherd's hut

Liked: Stayed for a long bank holiday weekend. Lovely hosts, super friendly farm animals (and quiet). The shepherds hut was exactly as it appeared, in a nice little field, well provisioned and spotless. Perfect break away. The surrounding area is absolutely stunning, just off the Cleveland way and Coast to Coast. The nearby walks are super. Local pub a very short drive or short walk away. Would happily stay again.

Roseberry shepherd's hut

Liked: Beautiful setting. Fantastic walks on the doorstep but also only 30 minutes away from the coast. The Shepherds Hut had everything you need - cooking facilities, lovely bathroom and log burner. Furnished to lovely tasteful standard. Would imagine it would be fabulous in summer too with outdoor seating and lovely views. Owners discreet but very friendly and approachable. Highly recommend and would definitely return.
