  • Quiet, family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from Withernsea
  • Within walking distance of two wildlife-packed nature reserves
  • Aquarium and small zoo a 40-minute drive away in Hull
Calling all walkers and wildlife spotters… fancy pitching up within strolling distance of not one, but two nature reserves? That’s the deal at Garth Farm Caravan and Camping in Hollym, less than 10 minutes’ drive from Withernsea’s coast and 40 minutes from Hull. It's all trees and open fields in the surrounds of this family-run East Yorkshire site, and the pleasing rural views continue at Toffling Hill Reserve (a few minutes’ walk), a place of grassy areas, boundary trees and a shallow pond to explore. Continue your amble for a further 15 minutes to hit the woodland, meadow and open water of Hollym Carrs Reserve, where you should certainly keep an eye out for a variety of birds, mammals and insects while you wander. Supplies can be picked up in nearby Withernsea, which has a couple of supermarkets, or Patrington (a five-minute drive), where it's highly recommended that you head to the local butcher to pick up bits for a barbecue back at base. For those with a no-cooking-on-holiday rule, there’s a local pub serving food and drink, and a coffee shop dishing up homemade cakes and sandwiches at Crossroads Garden Centre; both are around 10 minutes’ walk away. Facilities here are kept on the low-key side to ensure minimal impact on the surrounds, but the basics are covered in the toilet block on site.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Small but perfectly formed site! Excellent facilities with own water supply for our electric hook-up tent pitch. You can hire firepits and buy logs from the lovely, friendly owner, Hannah - who makes an effort to come round and meet everyone on site (something you don't always get). Close to Withernsea and other coastal resorts we visited – Hornsea and Bridlington. The messaging service to communicate with Hannah just before and while staying on site was a game changer. We will be back!

Disliked Nothing.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Owner she's a lovely lady couldn't be more helpful. Liked the size of the site. Location is good being not hidden but out of the way. The ground takes a peg very easily and the pitches are a very good size.

Disliked Tent pitches are on a slope so is difficult to pitch tent so bed is flat and that's being REALLY pickie

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The site was quiet when we arrived, we were the only tent on site at the time. Large pitch, with electric hook up and water tap. The W3W location info sent from the site prior to us travelling assisted us.

The toilets and showers were clean, the kitchen had a sink for pot washing. A fridge and freezer are available to use, which was a godsend for our cooler freezer blocks in the warm weather.

We spoke to Hannah and her daughter a few times, Hannah was friendly and helpful. We would recommend getting the fresh farm eggs (if the hens are feeling generous) the were lovely.

We were recommended the Plough inn pub by the owner which was nice dog friendly local pub 10 mins walk from the site, the pints of ABK went down a treat in the evening sun.

Disliked Not the sites fault but the only downside was the swarms of small black harvest flies that were extremely attracted to our green tent and chairs.

From the manager: Thank you for your comments - I'm glad you enjoyed your time with us.

Unfortunately, when and where the harvest / spraying is done is not in our control - when this does happen we have to deal with the day of harvest bugs. The beauty of staying in the countryside! Our best advise is to either have a fire/bbq/candles as they don't like the smoke.

Local attractions

Swap the rural scenes for seaside ones with a trip to Withernsea (less than 10 minutes by car). Along with arcades, shops, cafés and, of course, the beach, there’s also a lighthouse here with a museum; energetic visitors can clamber up the 144 steps to the top for pretty views. Anglers should make time for some fishing in Holmpton (less than 10 minutes), which has a couple of public fishing ponds. While you’re in the village, delve into the underground nuclear bunker at the former RAF Holmpton. Watery activities continue at Hornsea Mere, the largest freshwater lake in Yorkshire (40 minutes), with rowing, sailing, boat trips and fishing. It’s a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area for birds, so it’s a great spot for birdwatching, too. There are more sights to be had on dry land, such as the Elizabethan Burton Constable Hall & Grounds (35 minutes). Day trips to Hull city (40 minutes) come stacked with kid-friendly attractions, including The Deep aquarium (home to more than 3,500 marine creatures) and East Park, a public park with a small zoo and log flume ride.
