  • Simple woodland and meadow site near Pocklington, East Yorkshire
  • Five minutes’ drive to Allerthorpe Lakeland Park; York half an hour
  • Hot tub and firepits for hire, plus a garden room with woodburner
This is no-frills East Yorkshire camping with bonuses, for The Spinney Wild Camping sits on a nine-acre site consisting of oak woodland and open meadow, with plenty of room for dogs (on leads) and kids (no leads required) to have a run around – plus it’s close to all manner of watersports and country walks at Allerthorpe (fIve minutes’ drive). On arrival at this laid-back spot, there’s another bonus: you can choose where to pitch up, either in a woodland glade or on the mown field. At this point, please note the site is off-grid, so torches are essential – although there is running water and a simple compost toilet, a separate urinal and a pot-washing area with cold water available. Yet more bonuses of a stay at The Spinney include the garden room, complete with a woodburner so you can cosy up in inclement weather (this is England), and when the sun shines, you can hire the hot tub and watch the stars come up with something chilled in hand. Firepits are available for hire too, so you can get down to some barbecuing, but otherwise there are plenty of local country pubs if you fancy a change of scene.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The camp site was perfect. We were after a true camping experience for our 2 year old to be able to experience it himself. The couple in charge of the site let us use on of their chimney log fire burner with kettle attachment which kept the water hot through out the time it was attached at a small fee for the two nights. Wood is supplied on site for the fire pits, log burns and log fire hot tub. The site is quite large hosting from a covered wooded area and grass field patches, both spacious yet private. The area of the site is peaceful and tranquil. The site is very eco-friendly from compositional toilets, simple recycling, food waste, 4 gorgeous chickens and local squirrels, all equipment is looked after very well and cleaned regularly. The hot tub does come at an additional price but well worth it. It can be as cool or hot as you need it to be. Our 2 year old loved it as he through it was a big warm bath he could jump, splash and swim in, kept at the right temperature for him, and after he went to bed we increase the temp for a good soak of the adults. We will be coming back to the site when it opens next year (Est May 24), prebooking the site for a 7 nights as both ourselves and son loved it.

Disliked: Nil.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Neil and Cherie were lovely, and the site was fantastic. We chose to stay in the woodland area, but there was also the option to stay in the wild flower meadows. Both were gorgeous. Loved the tent shower. It's a quiet site, so no loud music which was great as you could really appreciate the rural location and the sound of the owls. We will definitely stay again.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Beautifully located site. Choice of secluded grassland or communal woodland pitches, each with there own benefits. Great views , lovely sunset and a nice hot shower at the end of a good day. Fire pits only £10 a night with the wood provided. Children friendly, if we'd have taken them. A real back to nature site, with the bats flying around at dusk and squirrels in the trees and the noises of farms close by.The owners were lovely kind people and couldn't do enough for everyone there. We will definetly be returning. Thank you so much for a great holiday.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: We were welcomed to the site with a genuinely friendly walk round the facilities upon arrival. The pitches are genuinely well spaced and all guests were respectful of the no music/noise policy. We slept really well despite the heavy rain in the night! A very relaxing experience.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The site was amazing from the moment we arrived up to the minute we left, there is so much room you feel as if you are the only people there, the owners can do enough to help you have the perfect stay. I would strongly advise the hot tub it's amazing and the kids loved their morning dip the next day. You truly feel you are in the wild at the spinney and the only other thing with you is nature it's self. It's the most relaxed we've felt in a long time. We use camping as a way to see the UK so usually don't return to a site but we are making an exception with the spinney and will be booking a stay next year as it's such a welcoming relaxing site

From the manager: It was lovely to have you with us for a week. So glad your family enjoyed the area and the Spinney. Really looking forward to seeing you again. Neil and Cherie
