  • Simple woodland and meadow site near Pocklington, East Yorkshire
  • Five minutes’ drive to Allerthorpe Lakeland Park; York half an hour
  • Hot tub and firepits for hire, plus a garden room with games
This is no-frills East Yorkshire camping with bonuses, for The Spinney Wild Camping sits on a nine-acre site consisting of oak woodland and open meadow, with plenty of room for dogs (on leads) and kids (no leads required) to have a run around – plus it’s close to all manner of watersports and country walks at Allerthorpe (fIve minutes’ drive). On arrival at this laid-back spot, there’s another bonus: you can choose where to pitch up, either in a woodland glade or on the mown field. At this point, please note the site is off-grid, so torches are essential – although there is running water and a simple compost toilet, a separate urinal and a pot-washing area with cold water available. Yet more bonuses of a stay at The Spinney include the garden room, complete with a sofa, blankets and games, so you can cosy up in inclement weather (this is England), and when the sun shines, you can hire the hot tub and watch the stars come up with something chilled in hand. Firepits are available for hire too (note that you're not permitted to bring your own firepit or fuel), so you can get down to some barbecuing, but otherwise, there are plenty of local country pubs if you fancy a change of scenery.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Everything!! Brilliant site, and the hosts were super friendly and helpful.
The fire pits to hire were super.
The whole site was really welcoming to the boys, they loved the hammocks to play on plenty of space to run around.
Nice to see the pigs and chickens, the boys loved seeing them share our watermelon. The toilets are so clean, don’t smell. Option to use a the shower between certain hours. Everything kept so clean and tidy. Nothing was too much, charged my phone to full twice for me which was really helpful.
Will be back.

Disliked Nothing. It was 10/10

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Again, everything.
Couldn’t fault anything.
Surprised by how the compost toilets literally didn’t smell at all, it was such a well kept and clean site.
Perfect with the amount of space so it didn’t feel at all crowded.
So welcoming and helpful.
Might try the hot tub too next time.
Did some geocaching in the local woods and walked the canals and visited a local pub in Melbourne. Plenty of space to keep the kids happy, they made friends with others camping, which is always a bonus of camping seeing them all play together .

Disliked Nothing , can’t think of anything I didn’t like. Only that we had to leave and come home.

Fabulous spacious site. Well cared for and very clean.
Despite being only 1 hour away from home I felt like I was in the wilds.
Neil and Sherie are such lovely people and couldn't be more helpful, they really have the camping sorted. I can't wait to come back.
Little Flora didn't want to leave, Nearly slipping her harness as I tried to get her in the car ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Disliked Nothing.

Liked We stayed for two nights and had a wonderful time. After forgetting our mugs, the owners kindly lent us some, which was much appreciated. We also hired a fire pit for £10 per night, which included a bag of logs, kindling, firelighters, a lighter and a heatproof glove – everything you need for a cosy evening around the fire.

The owner also sent a friendly text after we booked, which was a lovely personal touch. Throughout our stay, both Neil and Cherie were welcoming and very kind to our children, who absolutely loved being there. The site is perfect for exploring wildlife and plenty of space for kids to play.

The setting is perfect if you’re looking to switch off, enjoy nature and spend time outdoors. We loved the peaceful atmosphere and the beautiful walks around the site. The Melbourne Arms offers the best fries and sausage rolls we’ve ever tasted.

Overall, we had a lovely stay and made some great memories. It’s a beautiful campsite with excellent facilities, and we’d happily recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful escape in nature.

Liked Neil and Cherie do an amazing job at this peaceful and picturesque site. So welcoming and helpful. The site is so well maintained with a choice of areas to pitch in and plenty room so you have lots of space. It's the most civilised wild camping I've ever experienced, and possibly the best site I've ever been to!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We booked Spinney Wild Camping on a whim and really landed on our feet. Neil and Cherie were so welcoming and provided everything needed for a low-key wild camping experience. There is so much choice for tents and campers - no set pitches so you can tuck yourself away in the woods so it feels like you are alone. Yet there are the cleanest compost loos, a hot shower and washing up facilities right there. Spinney would suit you well if you want a quiet, back to nature experience. We stayed for 2 nights and saw/heard so many bird species, watched squirrels jump from tree to tree, hung out with the 3 piglets and the chickens, were visited by a deer and enjoyed really dark skies. It was heaven! Our hosts were amazing and clearly love and care for the land and the woods meticulously. We will be back soon!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Really lovely area, lots of room and pretty views to pitch up. Owners were so friendly and welcoming!
There were wheelbarrows to help bring your stuff, all the amenities for the fire pit (this is charged £10 extra but that’s perfectly clear when booking and totally worth it) and very clean toilets, washing facilities etc. all within a minute walk pretty much not matter where you are on the site.
What more can you want?

We will be back!
