  • Almost-wild site at a spacious meadow in the Yorkshire Wolds
  • A 15-minute drive to Bridlington; 25 mins to RSPB Bempton Cliffs
  • Wildlife to spot on site; two village pubs within a half-hour walk
Woodland, wildlife, walks and wonderful views in the Yorkshire Wolds – set on three acres of land in the Yorkshire Wolds, Keepers House is a splendid place for a peaceful outdoor break. There’s heaps of space for wildlife and guests alike at this family-run rural site between the villages of Kilham and Rudston. You’ll share the space with the resident pet ducks and chickens, and will often hear other birds like owls or woodpeckers and spot red kites flying overhead. At ground level, there are protected bat and badger colonies on site and deer have been spotted around the place too. To keep things nice and natural for the local wildlife, facilities on site have purposely been made low key – guests have access to portable toilets and picnic tables, along with a barn that’s got water and electric points and is a cosy place to gather on a damp night (it’s also got space to dry your clothes if you’ve got soggy while out and about). With plenty of space to go around, you’ll also be able to set up your pitch as you wish, perhaps setting up an awning and bringing along a firepit to warm up your stargazing sessions. Both of the local villages are about a mile and a half away, and both have pubs where you can refresh after making the walk there. Kilham also has a playground, tennis courts and a handy local garage shop; for more major stocking-up you’ll need to head to Driffield, 10 minutes’ drive away.

What customers say

This is a quiet, basic, and budget-friendly campsite with friendly, helpful owners. Guests loved the peaceful vibe, scenic surroundings, and an honesty shop for essentials. Fire pits for rent. Portaloos and a communal fridge provided, though some missed hot water for dishes and showers. Animals and wildlife are a charming bonus.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Very large open area, on-site amenities are great, and communication with owner was very helpful and informative. Location is easy to find and not too far down country roads.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked A wonderful spot, nice and quiet. Really friendy owners. Theres a cute little play park for the children. Chickens and ducks roaming, you can even feed them. There's also lots of wildlife to see! We even saw badgers pottering about on a evening. Very clean toilet, lovely little washing up area which had blue roll, cloths, washing up liquid and scourer sponges. It also had a communal fridge for campers to store food and a really well stocked honesty store including fire pits, kindling, ice lollies, drinks, fresh eggs, homemade chutney & jam, citronella candles, bubble wands! (And more) We visited Hunmanby bay and Filey beach which were only a 20 min drive away. Absolutely great value for money. We really loved our stay and will definitely be back ❤️

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Loved the hens, ducks and roosters and watching them. The roosters were often out walking round the farm which was great. They were not interested in or scared of my dog so he wasn't interested in them.

We saw a badger which was amazing!!

The honesty shop was fabulous, the eggs and homemade jam were amazing. Plenty of stuff there for if forgotten anything eg tent pegs, mallet, matches, also ice lollies and eggs. Appreciated the cash and card option to pay.

Toilet was a portaloo though it was well kept and much nicer than anticipated.

I really appreciate the host's commitment to conservation.

There are ambulances on site but this did not cause any disruption.

Disliked There is no shower available which is clearly reflected when booking, I just wish there was one for future bookings.

Liked If you are looking for peace and quiet then this is the place to be.

Disliked Elsan point was difficult could do to be lower and stood on the ground not on a stool.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hello, thank you for your review, were so glad you had a peaceful stay. The elsan is stood on the ground unfortunately can not be lowered hence why we put a stool there to make it more reachable however we will look into putting a pallet there.

We hope to see you again in the future.

Local attractions

This is an excellent spot for appreciating some of the simpler pleasures in life, like walking to Rudston (half an hour on foot) for a look at its monolith and a pint in the pub, or heading to Fimber 20 minutes’ drive) to stroll along woodland trails to find its little café in the forest. There are lots more lovely walks and bike rides around too, or you can take a little heritage ride on the Yorkshire Wolds Railway (20 minutes). There are more of those simple pleasures over at the coast too, where you can spend the day splashing about at the beach in Bridlington (15 minutes) or see huge colonies of seabirds at RSPB Bempton Cliffs (25 minutes). And how about dipping into a bit of local history? Burton Agnes Hall is 10 minutes' drive away, and also on a main cycle route for easy bike outings. Sledmere House & Gardens (15 minutes’ drive) is another that’s worth visiting, with a farm shop and animals to meet. For something quite different, wander around the abandoned medieval village Wharram Percy (half an hour).
