  • Luxury off-grid cabins 10 minutes’ drive from Sedgefield, Co Durham
  • North East Wake Park 20 minutes’ drive; Durham 25 minutes
  • Solar-powered cabin in 200 acres of countryside; pubs 10 mins’ drive
There must be few places better for taking a breather than the County Durham countryside. And you should find plentiful amounts of peaceful space and fresh air at Crowdy Hall, an off-grid retreat with hand-crafted accommodation set in farmland that's been owned by the same family for almost 100 years. A king-size bed, cosy sofa, kitchenette with twin gas hobs and ensuite bathroom with a solar-heated shower add a large dollop of luxury to these timber-framed hideaways. Small dogs are allowed, but please keep them off the bed and sofa. You should be able to keep cosy here no matter what the weather, thanks to the woodburning stove – and as there’s no wifi signal, this is your chance for a digital detox. There's plenty of entertainment though: grab a book from the shelf, play cards, cosy up by an open fire, explore the 200 rural acres that surround you – perhaps with a compass and map in hand – or maybe just gaze up at the stars on clear nights. From the parking area, your cosy cabin is a short walk down the driveway, through the farmyard and across a field. Please shut gates behind you to keep the sheep in, and be sure to wear boots after any rainfall, as it can be wet and muddy (in fact, it's a smart idea to take them with you whatever the weather). If you’re short on provisions, head to the pretty market town of Sedgefield (10 minutes’ drive), which has a couple of essentials stores, as well as a brilliant choice of pubs, cafés and restaurants.

Local attractions

Keep active with wakeboarding adventures at North East Wake Park (20 minutes’ drive), cycle the circular trail from Sedgefield (10 minutes) to Shildon, or go wild swimming at Durham Heritage Coast beaches including dune-backed Crimdon Dene or dog-friendly Blackhall Rocks sands (both half an hour). For more sedate days out, turn west to Raby Castle (35 minutes) and marvel at sumptuous apartments stuffed with priceless antiques; if you fancy a lakeside walk while you’re there, look out for the resident deer herds in the park. Lively Barnard Castle (45 minutes) reveals medieval castle ruins and the outstanding Bowes Museum – home to a collection of art, fashion and design including paintings by Goya and El Greco. There’s more history to be found at Beamish, the Living Museum of the North (40 minutes), famed for its open-air displays depicting northern life in times gone by. Lovely UNESCO-listed Durham (25 minutes) is home to a photogenic cathedral and castle, as well as lots of indie shops to browse in steep cobbled streets.
