  • Working farm site with pop-up dog-friendly pitches
  • A 10-minute drive from nature reserves and 35 minutes from Durham
  • A 35-minute walk to the butchers, supermarket and restaurants
All in for splendid views and countryside for miles…right here is a relaxing rural experience, well-situated for dog walks in the County Durham countryside and days out wildlife watching, mountain biking, hiking or investigating castles. High Woodifield is a pop-up site that’s set up on a working farm with clean, well-maintained surroundings and a few neighbouring sheep. All good to sizzle sausages or veg skewers at sundown? Sure thing. Barbecues are permitted and Crook, the local town 35 minutes’ walk away, has a high-quality butchers, fruit shop and supermarkets. There are cafés and takeaways when you’d like a night off the role of chef, and there are two fine-dining restaurants in Fir Tree village (35 minutes’ walk) for those who like the finer things in life (at least, when on holiday). There’s a regular bus service nearby for those who’d rather not stroll all the way to Crook. Those who are rolling off to other horizons – like Durham (20 minutes’ drive) or local nature reserves within 10 minutes’ drive of the site – will also be pleased to know that the site is just 15 minutes' drive from Hamsterley Forest and two minutes’ drive from the A68 too. As a pop-up, peaceful High Woodifield has portable toilet facilities, but you should bring your own drinkable water and heat water for your morning cuppas on a firepit.

This basic campsite boasts vast, open fields with spectacular views, perfect for families and those seeking peace. Visitors praise the friendly owner and clean facilities, though some note the lack of bins and the cold water-only shower. The price is considered high by some for the limited amenities.

Famer is also fantastic and came and gave us a jump start when the battery died on my car! Thanks again for all your help!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Location is handy but remote enough to go off grid for a couple of days. The guy that runs the site is spot on, we've stayed on the site a few times now. Great if u want to pitch up and chill and listen to the wildlife. Kids were amazed how close the sheep and lambs were coming. Advantage is the toilets are always clean and the site is always tidy.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Absolutely loved this campsite!
Great location, and the fields are massive!
Very clean and tidy!
The farmer/owner was lovely aswell!
You are right next to a main road but honestly because the fields are that big you hardly notice the cars going by, we were the only ones camping there but even if there were a lot of people camping there is 4 different fields to choose from so you would never be on top of each other!
This camp site is a lovely little gem with 2 porter loos, a tap and a shower(cold water only as the hot wasn’t up and running yet, but we go camping all the time and always take body wipes etc as we like the idea of ruff camping(we don’t go camping to stay at the rits)
So peaceful and quiet and our kids 6,3 and 1 absolutely loved being able to run around and play football whenever they wanted.
Thanks again for a brilliant stay.

Disliked The only one thing I would have to say is it doesn’t have any bins so we did just have to leave our rubbish bagged up on the grass as we didn’t have enough room in our car to take it home with us.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Quiet site not that far from the prom. Lovely big open space for kids to enjoy and run around, everyone on the site was really friendly and polite. The site did get busy but airshow was on and there was a car boot sale in the next field on Sunday morning which was great. The site is close to Tesco, a garage, home bargains and Asda.

Disliked The potholes that done my ankle in 🤣

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked That there was no restriction on size of tent.
Not over crowded.
Staff was friendly.
Dogs allowed.

Disliked I really didn’t like that the grass was cut short, it was literally a farmers field with grass that had just be trampled on to flatten. Made it hard work with young children as they kept falling over and wasn’t really able to play activities with them.

Local attractions

What wildlife havens might you visit nearby? Mountain bikers and hikers will want to tackle the trails around Hamsterley Forest (15 minutes’ drive). Closer by, the Hedleyhope Fell Nature Reserve (10 minutes) has plenty of creatures crawling around the gorse and heather, including lizards and slow worms. Birdwatching is splendid at both of the above, but especially at Low Barns Nature Reserve and Visitor Centre (10 minutes), a wetland reserve alongside the river Wear. That’s right now, but what was going on years ago in County Durham? Well, Romans would have roamed around the hilltop Binchester Roman Fort (15 minutes) and Auckland Castle (15 minutes) would have been a bishops’ palace. Durham (20 minutes) has plenty of history too, from its Romanesque cathedral and Norman castle to the museum in the botanic garden, which has Asian and Egyptian pieces on show. Head over to 11 Arches Park (10 minutes) to catch the Kynren outdoor show, which runs on select dates in the summer, and has live performances that bring to life different pieces of British history.
