A few pitches

  • Friendly site with rural views 15 minutes' drive from Consett
  • A short walk from the Waskerley Way trail for walking and cycling
  • Spacious pitches with access to heated shower block
A warm welcome awaits at Bonners Lodge, where chief of staff Raffi the cat oversees a small team of humans, dogs, horses, pygmy goats, alpacas, a donkey and a Shetland pony at this friendly family-run site. Officially it’s Ken and Michelle that own the place, but there’s always a helping hand from canine pals Sam, Bess and Charlie… Make the five-minute drive from the A68 and settle yourself in for a hefty dose of peace and quiet: pitches have splendid views over the surrounding farmland and woods, all part of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The plots have been deliberately well spaced to give you plenty of room, so it may be that your nearest ‘neigh’bours will be horses Rosie and Rusty in their paddock. Well-behaved dogs and human folk are invited to explore the miles of walking paths that lie beyond; you need only amble across the adjacent field to join the Waskerley Way. Kids need not even stray very far to let off steam, as they can just wander over to the site’s play area for a bit of swing and slide action. Everything you need for a comfy stay has been supplied here – a cosy, heated and modern shower block includes useful bits and bobs like hairdryers to keep the travelling barnet in check.

Bonners Lodge is a small, peaceful site with friendly hosts and spotless facilities. Guests loved the spacious pitches, fun game room, and farm animals. Enclosed pitches are great for dogs/kids. Some noted few toilets, but most found them clean with no waits. Beautiful rural views.

Rayhans Rigg powered grass and gravel travel trailer campsite (super)

Liked Small, very friendly site. Good sized fully enclosed pitch. Perfect to allow the dog or small kids room to play safely. Facilities are beautifully maintained. Loads of toys and play equipment for young ones to play with. Animals on site. Great walking from the door. Be wary of the sat nav trying to take you down a single track lane. I saw this advice from someone else and followed it. Stay on the A68 till you see Bonnners Lodge signposted.

Disliked Nothing at all. Total gem of a site. Cant wait to go back!

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Absolutely amazing campsite, best one we have been to. Shower/toilet block is immaculate, campsite goes above and beyond to make your stay smooth. Little room with additional cooking facilities and games/toys for kids was an amazing addition. Donkey rides in the morning for the kids, overall loved our stay and can't wait to go back!

Barkers Bay FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked We stayed at the barkers bay pitch - great for our dog. Lovely setting - hares and a red kite were around. Goats, sheep, alpacas and a pony were friendly neighbours and the facilities (including a games room) were excellent. We would stay again definitely.

Local attractions

Make the most of your rural location by getting your walking boots on or taking to your bike to hit the trails that crisscross this scenic area. Getting to the Waskerley Way requires you only to cross one adjacent field, and then you can join this route across the moors, past the Waskerley and Smiddy Shore reservoirs and to Hownsgill Viaduct, towering 46 metres above the woodland canopy. Other fab walks can be had around Derwent Reservoir, 20 minutes away; you can dangle a rod into the water here too, to see if you can snag one of the lake’s trout (rumour has it they can weigh up to 20lb). Cyclists, meanwhile, can find some top routes at Hamsterley Forest 25 minutes away, or get their pulses racing on the downhill tracks at Descend Bike Park (25 minutes). For family-friendly attractions, head to Hall Hill Farm 15 minutes away, for lots of furry adventures riding the donkeys, feeding the llamas and watching the sheep race, or take a trip on the steam trains of Weardale Railway, 25 minutes away. Within the same distance is the famed Beamish open air museum: bag 25% discount tickets for this before setting off from the Bonners Lodge team. Also 25 minutes away is Diggerland Durham, where kids of all ages (even ones who sometimes claim to be grownups) can drive lots of different vehicles… and take lots of pics of them doing so too.
