  • Family-friendly woodland site 15 minutes’ drive from Woodbridge
  • Sutton Hoo 10 minutes’ drive; Ipswich 35 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; hiking trails starting from the site; good stargazing
If you need to immerse yourself in a woodland setting to recharge your batteries, head to Rendlesham Camping (formerly Tangham Campsite), a Forestry England site in Rendlesham Forest, part of the Suffolk & Essex Coast & Heaths National Landscape. Halfway between the market town of Woodbridge and the Suffolk coast (both about 15 minutes’ drive), this peaceful site spreads across 10 acres of woodland. Hiking and cycling trails (not to mention splendid dog walks) start right outside this rural site. The children might be happy enough to chase each other round the trees, build stick forts and look for bugs in the undergrowth, but if they start clamouring for a proper play area, the nearest one is very close indeed, right by the site’s main car park (less than a five-minute walk). It’s a little farther away to the nearest pub if the adults start clamouring for a pint of ale: just over two miles away in Butley (five minutes' drive or a 45-minute walk). Daytime exploration might lead you to the Rendlesham Forest UFO Landing (five minutes' drive), where in 1980 bright lights were linked to visitors from another planet, or to Sutton Hoo (10 minutes), an Anglo-Saxon burial site that yielded many treasures upon its discovery in the late 1930s. Being in the middle of the woods means there is very little light pollution here, so after sunset grab a blanket and a flask of your favourite hot brew, and settle down to admire the spectacular night skies.

Powered grass campsite

Liked Lovely site, sits in the forest on the perimeter of Woodbridge Airfield (mostly disused). Small shop on site sells sweets and Ice cream. Pitch making is a bit odd, but a great place to stay

Disliked Not a lot. Shop could sell milk, bread etc, but a minor grumble simply because we forgot ours!

Powered grass campsite

Liked Expensive site fir 2 people for what is on offer.£35 a night.
Only 3 ladies toilets and showers . Showers were free and clean but very basic.
The site is being upgraded but as a visitor for nearly 30 years it does not have the same feel.
The reason we go...the forest on your doorstep and the dark skies.

Liked This site really is in Rendlesham forest / not by name only! and a perfect base for cyclists. We went at a very quiet time and not sure how the facilities would cope if the site was full.

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked The staff were really friendly and helpful and the size of the pitch was good. They were well spaced out with enough room between each pitch.
The onsite facilities are satisfactory.
As the site is in the forest, there was no light pollution, it’s great for a bit of star gazing. I will definitely be staying again.

Local attractions

Independent shops, cosy cafés and traditional pubs line the streets of Woodbridge (15 minutes' drive), on the River Deben. At the riverside Woodbridge Tide Mill Museum you might see the water wheel turn, alongside other huge cogs and mechanisms. The mill still produces flour, which is sold in several local shops. Squeezed between the River Alde and the North Sea, National Trust - Orford Ness National Nature Reserve (15 minutes) is a protected coastal area of shingle with a strong military heritage. Used to research and test elements of nuclear weapons, the area also includes two former airfields that now house deer and assorted birdlife. Neptune Marina, on the redeveloped waterfront in Ipswich (35 minutes) is lined with restaurants and cocktail bars. A sightseeing trip on the River Orwell might take you under the mighty Orwell Bridge and past the heathlands of Pin Mill, or all the way to the busy port of Felixstowe.
