  • Peaceful wild-style camping at a Suffolk heathland site
  • A 10-minute drive to Woodbridge, Rendlesham Forest and the east coast
  • Dog-friendly pitches with space for up to five guests; groups welcome
Heading out into the woods is a thoroughly peaceful and relaxed experience at Holistic Woods, a next-to-nature site in the heathlands of Sutton, part of the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. You’ll only be 10 minutes’ drive from Woodbridge here, but this is a properly rural escape where you can set up on grass pitches or in a secluded corner of the woods. Each pitch takes up to five people, so you can bring a small gang with you (or book several and have a larger gang) – and dogs are very welcome to come along and join in the fun too. Nature has been left pretty much untouched here, so pitches have a wild-camping vibe to them – but with the addition of portable toilets for added convenience. Please note that campfires can’t be permitted on site though, because there’s dense woodland all around. A small supermarket is about a mile away for any supplies you may need, and there are plenty of shops, pubs and places to eat around Woodbridge. This is a fabulous spot for hikers and bike riders, who can set out to explore the heath just around the site, head off to the banks of the nearby River Deben or stroll by the seaside (the east coast is only about 10 minutes’ drive away). It’s also possible to walk to the historic site of Sutton Hoo in half an hour or so.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Absolutely beautiful back to basics camping, very quiet, nice walks and you just pick a spot where you want to camp. Jo was helpful and told you everything you need to know.

Disliked: Not enough portaloos and only one tap for water but it wasn’t far to get.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Lovely small wood and grass area, plenty of room to set up alone, probably about 10 family’s when we arrived split between woods and grass area but all far enough away to be peaceful. Nothing fancy but that’s what we wanted just the three of us in two tents having fun. Near a road but little noise. Lovely walks just over the fence or coast 15 mins away. Had a fire off the ground for atmosphere. Slightly hard to find so make sure you know before you go it’s tucked down a track and easy to miss. Toilets ok .. overall it’s a wild camp but with toilets which we needed for kids. Back to nature but the east way. Lovely forests and coast just a few minutes away.

Disliked: All good can’t really think of anything a slightly more obvious sign on road but sites lovely. If anything be nice of woods was just for tents no camper vans but not an issue.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: I arrived Holistic Woods and loved the location straight away. You had a choice of open pitches or woodland pitches which I really liked. The site was very clean and lots to do in the local area for all ages. The location is perfect, the beautiful town of Woodbridge is only a 5 minute drive away, you have estuary walks, a beautiful park, a skate park, lovely shops and most of all some really nice pubs and some great places to eat. If you want a day out at the beach, I’d recommend Felixstowe. Overall I had a lovely relaxing stay and I’d highly recommended this campsite.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: I enjoyed my stay here so much that I extended it twice! Beautiful, clean, nearly wild campsite. You are free to pick your pitch in the pine forest (which you can drive into) or on grass pitches surrounded by pines, silver birch and ferns with plenty of space between campers. I received a really warm welcome from Jo the owner and felt relaxed straight away. A clear night sky here is breathtaking, I saw six shooting stars in a matter of hours. Wildlife is in abundance with plenty of butterflies, birds and bats. There is also some re wilding work taking place to increase the bio diversity of the pine forest which I found fascinating. Lots to explore locally. If you are entering the site via Woodbridge, postcode takes you to the forest lay-by, carry on driving and it's your first left.

Disliked: Leaving:(

Primitive forest floor tent or trailer tent campsite (wild)

Liked: Peaceful stetch of forest, slightly off the beaten track, but a stone's throw from Sutton Hoo and Rendlesham Forest trails. Joanne was also very friendly and welcoming.

Disliked: No shower facilities but not a big deal as we only stayed a couple nights.

Local attractions

Some intriguing things lurk in the natural areas around here… including lots of wildlife like owls, hares and Chinese water deer at Orford Ness National Nature Reserve (20 minutes’ drive) and the rather more unexpected UFO landing site hidden away in Rendlesham Forest (10 minutes). You can also seek out an ancient royal burial site stuffed with treasures at Sutton Hoo (half an hour’s walk). What else might you expect to find in these rural surrounds? Perhaps a collection of friendly animals at Easton Farm Park (20 minutes’ drive), Tudor towers at Framlingham Castle (20 minutes) or wine tours at Shawsgate Vineyard (25 minutes)? Other days out nearby might take you to Woodbridge (10 minutes) for a boat trip and a walk around the mill museum, to see the planes of Parham Airfield Museum (20 minutes) or for a dip in the sea from the beach at Aldeburgh (25 minutes).
