In need of a bite of respite from modern life, and plenty of peaceful walks, bike rides and the likes? Look to Camp Green, a spacious and peaceful five-acre site on a small family-run organic farm in the gorgeous Suffolk countryside, 20 minutes’ drive from Stowmarket. Self-contained tourers of all sorts are welcomed to spacious back to basics pitches that are off grid and just the ticket for relaxation. Getting out to see some of your surroundings is simple here: there’s direct access to a public footpath that links up to lots more paths, bridleways and circular walking routes (plenty of choice for dog walking and trail running, say the owners). The peaceful rural roads are also popular with cyclists, and the National Cycle Route No.40 passes just a few metres from the site’s front gate. A shorter walk of 10 minutes or so gets you into the nearest village, Debenham, a traditional little place that even gets a mention in the Domesday Book of 1086. It’s very much worth taking a wander around the timber-framed houses and pretty church, but this is also a thriving community hub that’s got an award-winning butcher, a well-stocked supermarket, a brewery shop and a deli to make sourcing picnic/barbecue supplies straightforward. If you don’t fancy cooking, the village also has a couple of cafés for home baking and fab breakfasts, a handful of top-notch takeaways and a pub that does good grub (best to book ahead though to ensure a table). And if you’ve overdone it on the eating front, you can always swing by the leisure centre for a gym session or game of squash…

Local attractions

Work your way outwards… some of the closest places that you might want to sniff out include the historic Helmingham Hall (10 minutes’ drive), where there’s a deer park and garden tours, or the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary (10 minutes) for experiences watching owls and birds of prey in flight. Rides on the ‘Middy’, perhaps? That’s the pet name for the steam railway that runs from the Mid Suffolk Light Railway Museum (15 minutes). You might form a bond with the animals at Easton Farm Park (20 minutes) too. Also within a short drive of the site, it’s easy to get quickly swept away by competitive games at the Fynn Valley Golf Club (20 minutes). Further out, make a lap of the walls around the 12th-century Norman Framlingham Castle (20 minutes). Seaside towns are certainly well-suited to lazy days with plenty of fresh ocean air - tuck into scallops at Aldeburgh (40 minutes) and go about swimming or strolling down the seafront promenade in Southwold (45 minutes).
