  • Grass pitches at an adults-only Suffolk holiday park near Saxmundham
  • A 20-minute drive to Aldeburgh beach; 25 minutes to Orford Castle
  • Entertainment, fishing, a pool and fitness suite on site
Occupying a quiet corner of a Suffolk holiday park 10 minutes' drive from Saxmundham, the spacious grass pitches at the adults-only Lonely Farm provide peace by the bucketload as well as all the advantages of the park’s facilities. And what facilities they are: with not one but two fishing lakes on site, this is a splendid spot for keen anglers, and there’s plenty more to lure you in too. On high-season weekends (March to October), you’ll be kept entertained by free activities and events, and when the weather is behaving, you can get out on the tennis court. Keep up your exercise regime (if you must) in the fitness suite, or swim a few laps of the heated indoor pool. If you prefer more sedate pursuits, you can simply have a wander along the park’s woodland walk. Guests staying on the pitches at Lonely Farm also have access to electric hook-ups, shower and toilet blocks, waste disposal points and fresh water points.

Liked: The site location was perfect for visiting the surrounding area. The area was very peaceful, we were a bit concerned about the possibility of noise from the caravan park but this didn't occur, maybe because it is early in the season. The use of a microwave and toaster was a nice touch, especially as we were in a tent with limited cooking facilities. Re the previous reviews, the boiler had now been fixed and the potholes in the drive filled! The Poacher's Pocket nearby serves amazing food and definitely worth a visit.

Disliked: The toilets and washrooms could have been cleaner. The soap dispenser in both the gents and ladies loo was empty for the week and there were no hand towels for much of the time. Whilst a mop was provided to clean the shower cubicles after use, it was dry with no water/cleaner in the mop bucket so you were basically wiping the floor with dirt from the previous use. There was leaking pipe work in the washrooms and laundry room. The outside bins by the washroom area were overflowing (with rubbish from the caravan site?) and it was disappointing that there was no facility to separate rubbish for recycling. We stayed for a week and during that time didn't see any staff for the campsite, either checking guests were okay or that all was well on site. I appreciate that during low season the facilities may not need to be cleaned daily but during the week we were staying we didn't see any staff checking the washrooms etc and if they did they failed to notice the empty soap dispensers! We dont mind a basic site, we have stayed at quite a few, but they have all been clean and hygenic. We are regular campers and used to being self sufficient. If this was our first experience of camping we would have been very disappointed. If the site is to continue as a camping/touring site it needs some tlc.

Disliked: Our pitch was flooded and so we had to go to a hard standing by the bins, which was used as a laundry depot for the main site. All the other pitches were also very boggy. No hand soap or paper towels in ladies or hairdryer point. All in very poor condition overall

Liked: Nothing.

Disliked: I’m sad to say that Lonely Farm has significantly deteriorated. We have been visiting for ten plus years. We stayed 5th April 2024 there were no staff to help with pitch allocation, there was no updated pitch allocation printout. The outbuildings appear to be used to store dirty laundry from Carlton Meres which is left out in view in basket trolleys not a pleasant sight. The large commercial bins are overflowing. There was no hot water as the boiler had broken down The wash rooms are grubby, the floors had not been cleaned. The toilets were the same. The entrance driveway is covered in deep potholes. It’s really sad to see what was a lovely friendly place to visit has been effectively abandoned. We booked two nights but stayed one.

Liked: Good location for getting out and about , would be lovely in the summer.

Disliked: We arrived late evening and had pitch 23 , was really disappointed. Called / texted Warden no answer. Pitch was next to four massive over flowing rubbish bins and a storage location. There was no hot water on site and no one to communicate with. Second day I managed to find a staff member in the storage location and we were told the boiler had been broken for days and we would have to go to the campsite next door to shower. This information was not provided before our arrival which was a shame. The campsite next door we had to drive to as the turning on the path was thick mud and we couldn’t get through. The facilities at lonely farm are very basic but were clean, but lots of leaking taps and blocked sinks. Maybe we arrived too early on this site , the field was swamped and it just didn’t seem ready for customer. Felt this little campsite could be so much more but think it’s the poor relation to Carlton Meres. Would we go back if passing, maybe but we’d check the pitch location was away from the storage facility and bins.

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: Potholes everywhere leading up to the park itself. Pitches where boggy had to be towed of by the tractor when we were leaving A big factor there was no hot water for showers and dish wash area. We were told the day we were going home that we could use the pods to shower in on the adjourning holiday park. When we arrived there was nobody to greet us just a board with our name on and we're to go

Local attractions

For days at the beach, take to the coast at Aldeburgh (20 minutes’ drive) and treat yourself to fish and chips, or head to cute little Southwold (25 minutes) for retro amusements at the Under the Pier Show on the pier. From there, hop on the ferry across the River Blyth to Walberswick (25 minutes) for a drink in the pub or to spot wading birds among its heathlands and marshes. Other day trips that should bring a smile to your faces include all the animal encounters at Jimmy’s Farm and Wildlife Park (40 minutes), Banham Zoological Gardens (an hour) for its penguins and sea lions, or the truck safaris across the savannah at Africa Alive Zoological Reserve (half an hour). Pleasurewood Hills Family Theme Park (45 minutes) is another good bet, with water rides and rollercoasters galore. Mix things up a bit by introducing some history into your lives: at Framlingham Castle (15 minutes) you can walk the defence walls, and at Orford Castle (25 minutes) there are displays of local Roman finds and audio tours of the castle’s tangle of passageways.
