  • Well-maintained site a 10-minute drive from the Suffolk coast
  • A 15-minute drive to Southwold, and half an hour from Sutton Hoo
  • Pub five minutes' drive away; a few minutes from a shop and petrol
Fancy some downtime exploring rural Suffolk? The tree-shaded pitches at Hill Farm are in a peaceful setting near the historic town of Saxmundham, handily accessible from the A12 and close to Suffolk’s popular coastline. This is a site that welcomes families and groups of friends – and it's wonderfully dog-friendly too (there’s a four-acre woodland to the north of the site that's great for dog walking). The site has good TV reception for relaxing indoors on damp or chilly days. Raised gas-powered or charcoal/wood barbecues are allowed too (no ground or silver barbecues please), so you can keep warm and toasty while grilling up a barbecue feast. A pub in Darsham village is a five-minute drive away (or half an hour's walk along a farm track through the fields). The nearest shop is at the local petrol station, a few minutes' drive away (near to the Darsham train station). There's also a good local bakery a few minutes' drive away along the A12. The popular village of Westleton (10 minutes’ drive) has village stores, a farm shop, a garage and an art gallery. Back on site, there are several toilet blocks with hot running water, plus four showers. There is also a washing machine, grey waste and chemical toilet disposal and recycling.

What customers say

This peaceful, friendly campsite offers spacious, private, treed sites. Facilities are clean & adequate, if basic. The owner is praised for helpfulness. Great for exploring the coast. Some road noise & spotty Wi-Fi. Good value.

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked Jaik was very welcoming, informative and most of all extremely helpful when I had a concern about my pitch (not a problem with pitch itself but I was worried about not having enough light for solar panel). He bent over backwards to help me despite being extremely busy having lots of last minute bookings. Most appreciated Jaik…very good man.
Good location for accessing area highlights (by vehicle.. not sure about local walks, facilities etc as only stayed one night as travelling through).
Everything I needed in terms of ample toilets, showers, washing up and chemical disposal.
Fabulous value for money.

Disliked I didn’t dislike anything myself but if you’re a very fussy person you might not like the rustic-ness of site facilities. Yes, they are basic but all works and for the price paid I’d be hard pushed to find anything else with as many facilities that I personally needed.
Also did note other comments re. traffic noise from A12 but it was only slightly audible and didn’t disturb my sleep one iota.

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked We had pitch 20 for the night which was our first pitch last year when we found this gem of a campsite, it's the perfect spot to rest and still get to places like southwold, aldeburgh, thorpness and more while avoiding all the over packed campsites with no space.

This campsite was basic and not one I would return to or recommend.

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked Location is close to the coast and local attractions. Very nice pub in Darsham which is a quick drive away.

We liked being close to nature in the woodland setting, although the trees had long since out grown their tree guards but the guards had never been removed leaving the woods looking like they aren’t maintained. The leaves from the previous year or maybe this year hadn’t been cleared and the place had a messy, dirty and untidy vibe.

Disliked As soon as we arrived and saw that we had a portable toilet and two bins sat right on our pitch I should have asked to move pitches. We would rather have walked a few yards to a toilet and bins tucked away in an amenities block. We had to try to pitch our tent so that the Portaloo and bins were hidden behind the tent but this wasn’t that easy as the ground was so uneven. The owner appeared late on our second night to put some fairy lights near our pitch as the campsite was very dark on the side we were on. We were chatting about washing up and he pointed me towards a washing up station just through the trees but I said I would be uncomfortable to use that as it was right on someone else’s pitch. The next day I used a washing up area within a toilet and shower area while my daughter showered but the water stopped working before I had finished washing up and my daughter came out of the shower saying she couldn’t get the water to turn on. We walked to find another shower and this one the water was burning hot or freezing cold and was just a dribble of water. We gave up and washed ourselves in a bowl by our tent.
We paid £30 a night, and for that I would expect functioning showers and flushing loos not Portaloo’s. I wasn’t at a festival after all.
There was random bits of furniture positioned around the site which I think was for people to use but made the place look like a dumping ground.
There was free WIFI but we just couldn’t get a signal that worked well enough and relied upon our mobile data.
Some noise from the road but this was the least of the problems.
Other reviewers have sung the praises of this campsite so they must have had more luck than us.
I believe it would be better suited to caravans and motorhomes.

Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked A nice, little quiet site. Lovely wooded location, plenty of room between pitches. Met the owner Jaik on arrival who was very helpful and pleasant. Adequate showers and toilets dotted around. For the extremely reasonable price paid, it's a 10 out of 10 from us!

Local attractions

Hills Farm is an great base for exploring the Suffolk coastline, with indie boutiques in cobbled streets and restaurants on the pier in the cute seaside town of Southwold (15 minutes’ drive), and an extensive sandy beach backed by dunes at Walberswick (10 minutes). Aldeburgh (20 minutes) is home to famous literary and music festivals, plus bracing strolls on the pebble beach and a renowned fish and chip shop. There’s plenty of history in these parts too, with stately part-medieval Orford Castle (25 minutes) open for tours of its angular keep, and you can follow a spectacular walk around the walls at Framlingham Castle (20 minutes). The star of the show here, however, might just be the Anglo-Saxon burial ground and museum showcasing its priceless, golden finds at Sutton Hoo (half an hour). Getting out and about in glorious and unspoilt countryside is easy too, with boardwalks crossing the heathland at National Trust-owned Dunwich Heath and Beach (15 minutes). At the famous RSPB Minsmere coastal reserve (20 minutes), you have the chance to spot otters in reedbed pools, with rare bitterns and avocets nesting nearby.
