  • Family-friendly meadow site within half an hour’s drive of the coast
  • A 20-minute drive from Aldeburgh and half an hour from Southwold
  • The National Cycle Route passes by the farm; campfires are welcome
Some might say this is one of the most scenic parts of Suffolk: the countryside just outside of the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a mix of lush green countryside, meadows and country estates. Sandy beaches and seaside holiday towns are within half an hour’s drive of these parts; and if you’re keen on pitching down here (which you very well might be), that’s where the Birds and Bee Campsite happens to be handily based. Conscientiously mown into long grass, the pitches at Bird and Bees Campsite are placed in carefully-selected glades with a whole half an acre per pitch. Guests are also encouraged to light up a traditional campfire. The three meadows are surrounded by hedgerows and mature trees, and connected via weaving pathways; you could call it a countryside housing complex without the brick and mortar. The only buildings on site are the converted dairy buildings, which host lovely facilities like showers. Knowing the pint-sized guests will be a fan of hide and seek in the thick grass and eves round the firepit, the site is also family-friendly. Cars must be parked off the field in the out-of-sight car park, and trolleys are on-hand to transport your belongings to the pitches. If you’re ready to take aim at Suffolk’s beaches, East Anglia’s beaches are less than half an hour’s drive away from the site, including Aldeburgh and Southwold. The National Cycle Route also passes on either side of the farm.

Local attractions

Supposing the coast is one of the key things that called you to this sweet part of Suffolk, Southwold (half an hour’ drive) might already be a name you’re familiar with. The popular coastal town is on the Suffolk heritage coast and has a busy harbour, a working lighthouse, a beach lined with classic beach huts, a pier and a clifftop cannon. To list off all of Aldeburgh’s (20 minutes) lovely features might take some time too. The fashionable town has a Georgian high street, popular fish and chips shops and a shingle beach lined with fishermen’s boats. Dunwich Beach (25 minutes) is a peaceful interruption to the Suffolk cliffs, and easily combined with a visit to the bird hides and wildlife trails at RSPB Minsmere (25 minutes). In Thorpeness (20 minutes), the large mere and its literary connections (with the Peter Pan author, for example) has led to lots of little boats being available to hire. Inland activities can also be on the agenda, whether it’s a visit to the 12th-century Framlingham Castle (15 minutes) or the market town of Halesworth (20 minutes).
