General

  • Touring pitches behind a country pub just off the A12 in Wangford
  • 10 minutes' drive from the seaside town of Southwold
  • Kid- and dog-friendly pub with excellent food and local ales

From pitch to pints in a mere minute or so (and, perhaps more importantly after a tiring day, vice versa…). How utterly fab is the Suffolk setup at The Plough Inn?

Ale connoisseurs will likely be particularly chuffed to hear that they’ll not be perusing some bog-standard beer selections here. On the contrary, the offerings here are the finest local brews, crafted at the Adnams brewery just down the road in Southwold. Not a beer-sipping type? No matter, the folks here have an equally well curated collection of wines and spirits to please all palates.

Naturally, the accompanying eats are top-notch too, using local produce where possible to come up with a daily changing menu of seasonal scran. There’s plenty of space within these characterful walls for all the family; well-behaved hounds are welcome and there’s a spacious play area to distract the kids from hunger pangs while they await their dinner (handily, on a fine day you can keep an eye on them from a table in the beer garden).

Spacious pitches just a short amble away are peaceful in vibes but kitted out with all the essentials, including water and electrical supplies and a well-maintained toilet block with spankingly clean loos and showers.

All this, and a cracking location too – coast and country are easily visited from this spot just off the A12 in Wangford. There's a fab farm shop a mile away, and other useful amenities are 10 minutes’ drive away in Southwold (along with paddles and seaside strolls).

Campsite had all that we needed and was nice and quiet

    Disliked:

Hard to understand the pub and food set up. There didn't appear to be anybody in charge just staff of which some were good and other less so. First night was good, we had a few drinks and a meal and it was fine. Second night was very poor, order was placed and then after a long wait we were told only one of us could have the curry, even though other diners had ordered after us and got curry!!! After changing my wife's order we then waited, and waited, and waited ......after nearly an hour we gave up went back to the camper an for beans on toast! Nobody really took responsibility, just blamed it on the kitchen and that things came out how ever they decided! Like I say total or Management control. The place is busy so they must be doing something right but not good for us on second night.

Level hard stand but only two available and both about 7m long. Electricity is supplied at 6 amps, water supply on stand also. They also have about 6 other grass pitches. (So it's only a small set-up.
They have a shower room and toilet which you need to obtain the pass code for. The shower costs £2 for 15 mins so enough time for two of you to shower. It's very clean and modern.
The Pub itself is very welcoming with a nice atmosphere and I have to say excellent food. I enjoyed a rib-eye steak cooked to my preference. A good selection of ales for all tastes supplied by a local brewery.

    Disliked:

Distinct lack of lighting from the carpark to the pitches.

The Plough is owned by Adnams, the brewery company, serving excellent food, though not on Sundays and, of course, excellent beer. The caravan/motorhome site is akin to an excellent Caravan Club CL with concrete hard standings and use of an excellent shower WC. For those with children, there is also a very well equipped play area. Would certainly go again.

The caravan site was very well set up and extremely clean. It was easy to find. When we arrived we were pleasantly greeted and shown our pitch. We decided to eat in the pub the first evening and the service and food were so good that we ate there every evening. The standard of the food was excellent and there was plenty of it too. There was a wonderful atmosphere in the pub and it was very busy. Word must have got around about the wonderful food.

    The pub food. Clean toilets.

    Disliked:

The hard standing pitch was too small for the caravan, the water supply had no hose so went everywhere, the shower was £1 for 7mins but only accepted £2, only one toilet which in same cubicle as shower, bins over-flowing & encouraged wasps which for a site with only 5 pitches was unacceptable. Bar staff wouldn't run a tab despite us staying on their sites accommodation.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review and we are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your visit to The Plough Inn Wangford. We do list the pitch sizes on Pitchup.com for guests to make sure that this suits their needs so we do encourage this to be checked prior to booking.

Our rubbish collections are handled on a weekly basis by our contractors and when situations like this occur we do request extra collections to assist with rubbish disposal. We are sorry to hear that you caught us while we were waiting for such a collection.

Tabs are not something that we are able to run for those guests that choose to stay on our site due to new GDPR and data protection regulations. We are sorry that you feel that this impacted your stay negatively.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us.

Kindest regards,
The Plough Management Team.

Local attractions

You may want to see the sea, or you may want to see where your beer was birthed – either way, you’ll want to make a trip to Southwold, 10 minutes away by car. Tour the Adnams brewery to see the ales being made, or wander down the pier to play on the madcap machines of the Under the Pier show.

The walk from Southwold to Walberswick (via little seafood huts and a teeny foot ferry) is rightly popular, as are the exciting high-speed boat trips from the harbour. Also along this stretch of coast are the big beasts of the Africa Alive! animal park (10 minutes’ drive), coastal birdwatching at RSPB Minsmere (20 minutes) and arty Aldeburgh (half an hour’s drive).

Set your sights inland instead for more animal antics at the Oasis Camel Park (25 minutes) or an aristocratic amble around the castles in Framlingham and Bungay (both about half an hour away). Beccles is a 20-minute drive away if you fancy a canoe trip, a splash in the heated outdoor pool or poking around in independent shops, followed by some nosh in one of its locally-owned restaurants.

Must see

  • Somerleyton Hall and Gardens (11.1 miles)
  • Fritton Lake Country World (12.6 miles)
  • Framlingham Castle (15.4 miles)

National Trust

  • Elizabethan House Museum (17.3 miles)
  • Orford Ness National Nature Reserve (19.1 miles)
