  • Smart adults-only and dog-friendly glamping retreat in Norfolk
  • A 10-minute drive to Thetford Forest Park; short walk from Peddars Way
  • Barbecues provided; country pub and post office a short walk away
Chasing down a Norfolk stay where you’re able to walk to your heart’s content? Somewhere within reach of obstacle courses in the trees or forest mountain biking trails? Thompson Hall Retreat may be all about the glamour as an adults-only glamping hideaway, but it’s also a wildlife haven canopied by mature beech and elm trees… and that sets the tone for the rest of the stay, as the meadow is surrounded by arable land and the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. The theme continues off site, whether that’s with walking, cycling or mountain biking in Thetford Forest Park (10 minutes’ drive away) or the wildlife around nearby trails, of which there are two top dogs – the Peddars Way all the way to the coast or the Pingo Trail, a shorter route where wellies are essential. After all the exploration, it’s a good job that this dog-friendly site isn’t without its creature comforts. That includes showers and a homely feel all around, plus barbecues already provided (perhaps for putting up your feet in the evening with a belly full of food?) The site is at the bottom of a lane, accessed by an unmarked track across an arable field, but that doesn’t mean you’ll find it difficult to track down a place to eat. The local village, Thompson, has a post office, play park and a historic country pub with local ales and food 20 minutes’ walk away (there are more 10 minutes’ drive away too).

Local attractions

So, you’ve got your walking boots at the ready – or perhaps your trusty bicycle. Then you’re ready for the Peddars Way (around 10 minutes’ walk), a 46-mile walking, cycling and horse-riding route along an ancient Roman road through The Becks, Thetford Forest Park and Hunstanton. You’ll also want to plan in some time at Thetford Forest Park (10 minutes’ drive), whether for woodland walks, mountain biking trails or some wholesome wildlife spotting. Keeping things shorter? The Pingo Trail (10 minutes) has a smaller seven-mile trail through ancient woodlands and past ponds. For those of you who’d prefer to stick to the city streets, a walking tour of Norwich (50 minutes) could include the medieval cathedral or local history museum. That’s just one of the museums around here… others include Dad's Army Museum Thetford (25 minutes), dedicated to the BBC sitcom Dad’s Army, or Bressingham Steam & Gardens (35 minutes), a living collection of steam trains, some ready for you to climb onboard. Where else to pave out the way to? Perhaps Banham Zoo (25 minutes)? You might spot monkeys in the flesh here… perhaps they’ll inspire you to give the treetop course at Go Ape Thetford (half an hour) a proper go.
