  • Upscale, adults-only shepherd’s hut on a working farm in rural Norfolk
  • Sainsbury Centre, Norfolk Tank Museum and Norwich 20 minutes’ drive
  • Underfloor heating; well-equipped kitchen; private decking and firepit
If you’re looking for a town detox, quiet walks and scenic cycle rides, gather up your other half and head for The Owl’s Rest in rural Norfolk. Adults-only and smartly decked out, this shepherd’s hut sits on a private corner of a working farm just outside the village of Hethel. Your handcrafted accommodation is cleverly designed with a sumptuous double bed and comfy sofa in open-plan living and sleeping space, and a natty ensuite bathroom with a waterfall shower. Linens and towels are provided for your stay, and thanks to the underfloor heating, you’ll be toasty warm whatever the weather. Handy appliances including a toaster, kettle, microwave and hob populate the modern kitchen – handmade from local oak – and the dining area has everything you need for romantic meals for two. Outside, there’s a mini-kitchen garden with pots of herbs for the chefs among you to flavour your food. Take advantage of decent weather to put your feet up on the decking and admire the leafy rural views, or cosy up around the firepit (wood is provided) to gaze at the starry skies on clear nights. Handily, the supermarkets of Wymondham are only 10 minutes’ drive away for restocking supplies, and the farm owners can recommend a couple of welcoming pubs within 15 minutes’ drive for nights out. Please note: on occasion you may hear noise from the Classic Team Lotus test track; however, this does not happen daily or in the evenings.

Local attractions

Every second Sunday of summer, the farm owners open up their 389th Memorial Exhibition, paying tribute to the American troops based there during World War II. Guests at the shepherd’s hut have free access to the displays. Fans of war memorabilia can also see armoured vehicles at The Norfolk Tank Museum (20 minutes’ drive, summer only) and fighter planes at The Muckleburgh Military Collection (an hour). There’s a more peaceful heritage to be found in Norwich (20 minutes), where you can visit the Romanesque-style cathedral and its colonnaded cloisters, shop for souvenirs at the Victorian-era Royal Arcade and take a breather in the colourful Plantation Gardens, laid out in a former quarry. Arty types can have their fill of funky sculpture at the contemporary Sainsbury Centre (20 minutes) – and should you feel the need to run amok in the open air for the day, you’d better head for BeWILDerwood Norfolk (35 minutes) to let off steam on obstacle courses and treetop ropes.
