  • Family-friendly wildlife haven five miles from the North Norfolk coast
  • Seal-spotting boat trips a 10-minute drive; half an hour from Cromer
  • Firepits; bundles of kiln dried logs to buy; dairy shop and pub nearby
From salt marshes to seal-spotting and sandy beaches… if nature is your calling, head to the wildlife haven at Barley Fields Camping and set up base five miles from the North Norfolk Coast. From this peaceful vantage point with spacious grasslands for families to unwind and sheep grazing nearby, brown hares and deers sometimes skip by and if you’re lucky, you may catch sight of barn owls or skylarks in the sky (dark skies status applies here). This nine-acre working farm site is a 10-minute drive from Morston Quay (a National Trust site where you can take a boat trip to spot grey seals or spend an hour or two on the Blakeney National Nature Reserve). Likewise, the coastal villages of Blakeney, Morston and Stiffkey (a good stop for salt marshes and picking samphire or blue-shelled cockles) are all a 10-minute drive away. Wake up with fresh milk and farm produce from the dairy shop in Binham, a five-minute drive or half an hour’s walk away. There’s a petrol station and small food shop here if you want to pair your milk with some crunchy cereal and a family-friendly pub for later in the day. While you’re there, pick your way around the old church ruins at Binham Priory. Then, head to sights further afield from a bus stop within walking distance of the site or hire a bicycle from Wighton (a 10-minute drive) and pedal your way around the countryside trails and lanes. Back on site, things are kept fairly basic with a unisex amenities block and dishwashing area, plus chemical disposal points and handy water taps around the site. Why not buy bundles of kiln dried logs to feed a campfire in one of the firepits, too?

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Soo relaxing. The two fields are really well kept and the pitch sizes are enormous and most have a bench. Love the firepits and the facilities were always spotless. Great location for access to the coastline by car and shops are only a ten minute drive. Very much recommend.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful views and peaceful, quiet campsite.
Absolutely spotless facilities, no matter what time of day you went there.
Had lots of little extras that really made a difference - washing up liquid and clean sponges/clothes, clean tea towels, hot water in the showers always, picnic benches that you could borrow (big and also small for children), marshmallows for your camp fires.

Absolutely brilliant camp site!

Local attractions

If you’re after pine trees, sandy beaches and a cutesy quay to try out crabbing, Wells-next-the-Sea (a 15-minute drive) is a good stop to add to your list. Further along the coast, there’s an almost endless expanse of beach at the Holkham National Nature Reserve (15 minutes) or Cromer (half an hour), a family-friendly seaside town with a nice stretch of sand good for surfing, windsurfing or kitesurfing in the sea. For those who want to name all the different types of birds, Stiffkey (10 minutes) is the place to go. And for more wildlife discovery, Pensthorpe Natural Park (15 minutes) is nicely geared towards families with outdoor activities and eco playgrounds. Looking for something a little different? Holkham Hall (20 minutes) has a walled garden and a rather stately home. There’s also Wiveton Hall (10 minutes) for more historical garden tours. Afterwards, perhaps check out the old abbey grounds and shrine in the historic village of Walsingham (10 minutes), which has popular pilgrimage routes.
