  • Riverside pitches at a rural spot around 10 miles from Cambridge
  • Shepreth Wildlife Park 20 minutes' walk; 25 mins' drive to Audley End
  • Easy access to well-lit cycle path, main road and train station
Day out in Cambridge or some time spent wandering around the countryside? Either one is equally possible for guests staying at Shepreth Mill. This Cambridgeshire site is just under 10 miles from Cambridge city centre but also surrounded by lovely rural landscapes to explore. Getting around should be nice and straightforward – and you’ll have options too. The A10 passes just by the site, as does a new cycle path running all the way to the city (it’s all lit up at night so don’t worry about staying in town for a drink or some food). Shepreth village is a mile away, with a train station for those who’d rather get around by public transport. The village also has a tea room, and there’s a pub a few minutes' walk from the site too, but for more eating options and shops you’ll need to head to Melbourn (five minutes’ drive) or on to Royston (10 minutes). When not out and about, you’ll be staying at a pretty site that’s got a river bordering two sides and a lake within the grounds. The lake is a good place for wildlife spotting, as the island has ducks, moorhens and swans on it at all times; look out across the river Shep, meanwhile, and you may spot the residents of the badger sett on the other side. If you fancy a lengthier exploration of the river, you can stroll along the waterside path that leads to an RSPB reserve in one direction and a good coffee shop in the other. Simple facilities on site include toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: We had alot of space as we were alone the first night, daughter enjoyed running around the fields and spotting the duck.

Disliked: The toilet/shower block is old and to be recently renewed however it is almost unacceptable. The womens shower didn’t work, the mens urinal should be signed out of order as was broken and the urine goes into an open bucket below. Understandably the block is to be renewed and the owners are new waiting for planning permission but that doesn’t mean neglecting cleanliness. The whole block was covered in thick cobwebs, damp and mould. Posters hung faded from over 10 years ago. I would not come again as it was almost an insult to stay in such conditions with a baby and small child.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Space we had (although we arrived last) was perfect for us on an edge and not surrounded by others. Small site with lots of potential for these new owners.

Disliked: Nothing really given that the are trying really hard as new owners to fix everything to a good standard ... back in a year to see if they've made the big leap I'm sure they can.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: A small & quiet site. Level hardstanding pitches. Friendly staff.

Disliked: Toilets unacceptable. Just a single urinal that drained into a bucket & a single flush toilet that was blocked. The electricity kept going off. The nearest pub (The Green Man) doesn’t allow dogs, so we had to walk 2 miles with no pavement to the nearest pub The Chequers in Fowlmere (very nice pub), as The Plough in Shepreth doesn’t open very often. No local convenience shop, so not possible to buy food without a car or packing up & moving the motorhome.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: It was somewhere to stay over the Easter weekend

Disliked: The site is in need of serious renovation and whilst the owner explained he has plans the fact is that the facilities are woefully inadequate. Electricity supply is by cables strung out from 13 amp plugs in some cases. The charges would be reasonable with facilities as they are I think it is too expensive.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: The owner was very attentive and whilst the facilities were quite basic, they were clean and tidy. The site is also a 5 minute walk from a pub that does simple inexpensive pub grub. Theirs also another pub within walking distance that had great atmosphere and a wide selection of ales, craft beers and the like.

Disliked: It's a currently a basic site that's undertaking improvements whilst also maintaining an income. What you see is what you get. The only thing that would be more pleasant, would be to arrange the septic tank emptying for slightly later in the day when people aren't getting up and showered/feeling slightly hungover. But equally I'm sure this is a rare occurrence.

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Quite. Kind. Small. Literally just 6 electric sites and 3 grass sites. Owner is a gentleman! Perfect place, for relaxation, During night, is pitch dark! ….Between two small ponds!! Beautiful!

Disliked: Bathroom for English standard on pitch sites, not bad! Obviously cold and hot taps separated. Owner does his best, customers are a bit careless! ….I recommend just to put lights on signs outside for drivers to find the site during dark time!

Power optional cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: The location was lovely. With the lake and the river. It was a small sweet site. Just down the road was a lovely pub and numerous cafés on the way to Melbourn.

Disliked: The showers whilst functioned, they were effectively unusable. In fact that was the case for the toilets as a whole. The owners said that they were waiting for council permission to build a 'luxury toilet block. But that doesn't prevent, fixing, decorating, and cleaning of the current block. The cost was the same as a good club site.

Local attractions

While you’re up in Shepreth (20 minutes' walk), stop in at Shepreth Wildlife Park to meet all sorts of exotic animals including tigers, aardvarks and red pandas. The same amount of walking in the opposite direction will take you to RSPB Fowlmere to see native species instead. It’s likely you’ll spot some wildlife while out and about too – the walk from Barrington to Haslingfield is a particular favourite, with great views over Cambridge too. For a closer look at what Cambridge (half an hour by car or public transport) has to offer, spend a day (or more) in the city, dipping in and out of the colleges, visiting the museums and taking a boat trip on the river. To see some more fabulous buildings, plan outings to the National Trust estates Wimpole Hall (15 minutes), centred around a splendid 17th-century mansion, and Anglesey Abbey (half an hour), which also has gorgeous gardens and a woodland play area. Audley End (25 minutes) is another lovely estate that’s well worth a visit.
