  • Simple, peaceful pitches in the grounds of an Elizabethan manor house
  • In the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Self-catering facilities, restaurant and licensed bar on site
Stroll over to this site for satisfyingly simple stays in the grounds of a gorgeous listed Elizabethan manor house – pitches are in a peaceful field that’s flat at one end but sloped at the other to give top views of Brown Clee Hill. Set five minutes’ drive from the village of Longville in the Dale, in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the lack of light pollution around these parts also means that you’re likely to have some stunning starry skies to gaze up at after dark (clouds permitting, of course…). If the views inspire you to get out for a walk, there are plenty of paths to pick from in the surrounds, including the one that takes you up Brown Clee, half an hour’s drive away. Ramble around Carding Valley and the Long Mynd too, or jump in a canoe for a trip on the River Severn (all within 20 minutes). The site’s also within half an hour of historic Ironbridge town, the Severn Valley Railway and Attingham Park National Trust estate. All the explores are bound to make you peckish, so retreat back to the site when hunger strikes and light up a barbecue on the terrace or use the self-catering facilities and licensed bar inside the main building. Those who don’t fancy cooking can eat in the restaurant, which serves breakfasts, an all-day menu and a nightly sociable supper menu.

Local attractions

Immerse yourself in the past at the Acton Scott Working Farm Museum, 15 minutes’ drive away, for a glimpse of what life was like in rural communities during the Victorian era. This spot has shire horses to have a gander at along with regular wheelwright and blacksmith demos. To swot up on the industrial side of 19th-century history, the Ironbridge Gorge – a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 10 museums – is where to go. After investigating the cultural heritage centres, take yourself over to a tunnel that oozes tar, an old clay tobacco pipe factory and the world’s first cast-iron bridge (25 minutes’ drive) as well. Cross said structure, then head to the Severn Valley Railway (25 minutes) for a trip on a vintage steam locomotive line that traces the River Severn from Bridgnorth to Kidderminster. Finish it all off with a look at how the other half lived in times of yore at the National Trust’s Attingham Park estate (half an hour away).
