  • Glamping tents on a farm a five-minute drive from Draycote Water
  • Coventry half an hour’s drive; Silverstone Circuit 45 minutes
  • Peacocks and farm animals; spacious pitches over 35 acres of land
At Draycote View, on a 35-acre working farm a 15-minute drive from Rugby, wild camping meets glamping. How are these two concepts remotely compatible, you might ask? Well, the luxury part refers to the accommodation itself, which is in large tents with comfortable beds and cosy vintage-y touches like reclaimed furniture and colourful bunting. Fairy lights around the tents sparkle up after dark, but please note that the electric supply is at the top of the farm, not on the field. As for the wild camping element… well, there are limited amenities on site (no showers, for example), though there are composting toilets. Wake up to the soothing sound of lowing cows and chirping birds, and emerge from your tent to spot goats, chickens and peacocks grazing, strutting and preening in the adjacent fenced-off field. When it’s time to stretch your legs, there are trails skirting the fields, or you could drive to places like Cock Robin Wood (10 minutes’ drive), on the outskirts of Rugby, for superb woodland walks. Draycote Water (five minutes) is a vast reservoir with sailing and paddleboarding (you must seek permission to launch), plus fishing and birdwatching. The flat tarmac trail circling the lake is popular with both walkers and cyclists, and there’s a playground where the kids can let off some steam. Back at the site, you can fire up the barbecue (provisions can be sourced in Stockton or Long Itchington, a five-minute drive away) and dine under the stars, or head to a local pub for a traditional meal and a pint – the nearest is a 15-minute walk away, on the banks of the Grand Union Canal.

Local attractions

Coventry (half an hour’s drive) is famed for its two cathedrals: the one dating from the Middle Ages sits in ruins following bombing raids in World War II; the other was consecrated in the 1960s and features a modern, dramatic stained-glass window. For something completely different, check out The Wave indoor waterpark. You might be able to get last-minute tickets for a play at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon (40 minutes); if not, you can still explore all things Bard-y, including the half-timbered cottage where Shakespeare was born and the building that was his school, and where you can now learn to write with a quill. At Silverstone Circuit (45 minutes) you can experience the thrill of this high-speed Formula One racetrack by booking car or bike track days. The kids, meanwhile, can have a go on the Scalextric.
