  • Family-friendly tent pitches on a farm site in the countryside
  • A 20-minute drive from Cannock Chase; 40 minutes from Ironbridge
  • Discounted passes for the Play @ Lower Drayton Farm activities on site
Fancy a properly family-friendly farm break? This Staffordshire place is just the spot – Lower Drayton Farm is a place where both pitches and playtime are sorted in the same place. Once you've settled on the tent pitches on the farm, head to reception to pick up a half-price ticket for Play @ Lower Drayton Farm next door, which has a dino discovery maze in the summer, a climbing wall, an astro slide and other play areas. So, that’s a way for the kids to let off steam sorted. As for the most important meal of the day, guests have access to Play @ Lower Drayton Farm one hour early in the morning should they want to purchase a full English breakfast (all made from local ingredients). As for more facilities, showers and toilets are based on site, as is a football field. On your spacious grass pitch, there’s room for tents for up to six people and you'll be able to bring along a barbecue for sociable outdoor evenings too. Just over two miles from Junction 13 of the M6, the location’s pretty darn handy too. Cannock Chase Forest is 20 minutes’ drive away and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ironbridge Gorge is around 40 minutes’ drive away. Pint and a plate of chips? Penkridge’s many places are just a 25-minute stroll south.

Local attractions

If you want as much time outdoors as possible, Cannock Chase Forest (20 minutes’ drive) certainly has you sorted for trails through the trees. There’s a Go Ape obstacle course if you’d rather take a high-up route over obstacles strung between the trees (and they have zipwires for the journey back to solid ground). Tear up the Cannock Chase MTB Trails (15 minutes) if you’re that way inclined too. The UNESCO World Heritage site of Ironbridge (40 minutes) might attract your eye too. Blists Hill Victorian Town (35 minutes) recreates the 19th-century industrial setting and the Iron Bridge and Toll House make a very historical place for a little ramble along the riverside. A little further afield, those who can’t turn down a few thrills might want to take the trip to Alton Towers (50 minutes). Meanwhile, down south are Birmingham and the creative Cadbury World (50 minutes) factory.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: This was flat-out a fantastic experience. The pitch was good, the toilets and showers spotless (though may be quite busy if the site is full) and access to the playbarn was easy. The guys at the site were just fantastic, hugely helpful and genuinely kind. I thought Kim was a particularly lovely- I watched her organise, support and encourage the team. She role modelled the sort of leadership that helps people to perform to their best. The playbarn itself is huge! It would have been very easy to let my 9yo just spend all her time there but that would be to miss out on all the other fantastic stuff- the animals, the petting zoo, the playgrounds, the (real) fire engine, the zip wires, the pedal powered go-karts and much more.

Disliked: nothing. The M6 can be heard but that wasn't a problem for us.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Size of field, friendliness of staff (and attentiveness to cleaning toilets and showers), 50% of play farm (amazing day), foam party in field for children, level pitches

Disliked: No wash up area but staff noted this as improvement for next year. Would need more showers if more guests but was ok for the numbers on site this weekend
