  • Hand-built Peak District shepherd’s hut overlooking a village ford
  • A five-minute drive from Tittesworth Reservoir and The Roaches
  • Complete with decking, barbecue, chiminea, small kitchen and bathroom
Got your eyes on a break in the pretty Peak District? The national park will be your new stomping grounds from The Old Pumphouse. This hand-built shepherd’s hut is fully styled on the ‘olde worlde’, as the hut has its very own grounds overlooking the village ford with a barbecue, chiminea and double rocking seat - quite the private place to prop up your feet. Where exactly is this little sphere of its own? Well, the hut is in the tiny hamlet of Upperhulme four miles from Leek in Staffordshire. It’s in the southwest of the national park, meaning you’ll only be five minutes’ drive from The Roaches, a rock formation that’s practically a magnet for admirers of hiking and climbing. On that note, there are miles of scenic walking, climbing, picnicking, bouldering and photography spots around this area… and for those of you who want to check out the local ales, there are several country pubs close by, including one old inn a few minutes’ amble away. Local independent businesses such as pubs, cafés and shops are out in full force in Leek (10 minutes’ drive), a small market town. So, there's always a way to spend the evening, whether there or chilling out with a barbecue on site. There are several seating areas around the hut and garden, including the private raised decking area. In the hut itself, there’s a small kitchen with a sink and double gas burner, plus a four-foot double bed and table and chairs, both handmade. And to scrub any grub, the adjoining private shower and toilet cabin will come in handy.

Local attractions

Walking and cycling will most certainly be on your radar, whether it’s local trails or the five-mile route around Tittesworth Reservoir (five minutes’ drive). With the reservoir so close by, this is also a good start to dip one’s toe into some water-based activities, whether it’s sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding or raft building. On firmer land, what other activities might take your fancy? Perhaps The Cloud’s mountain biking trails (20 minutes)? An amble around the spa town at Buxton (15 minutes), where there’s a rather splendidly scenic drive to get there? All the rides and rollercoasters around Alton Towers (25 minutes)? Or the fur babies and other animals at the Peak Wildlife Park (15 minutes)? There’s another world below the surface too, as you’ll soon see around the limestone chambers at Poole's Cavern & Buxton Country Park (15 minutes). And along the eight-mile Manifold Way, there’s another natural cavern at Thor’s Cave (25 minutes), in the side of dramatic limestone cliffs.
