  • Pods in an orchard five minutes’ drive from Rocester in Staffordshire
  • Alton Towers 10 minutes’ drive; Peak District National Park 15 minutes
  • Farm and woodland walks; pub and shops five minutes’ drive
Set high on a hill with spectacular Staffordshire views, the units at EcoPod Holidays provide a cosy, warm and sustainable living space made from locally sourced timber combined with reclaimed wood. Five minutes’ drive from Rocester village, the pods look over the Weaver Hills and Churnet Valley (both good for walks and bike rides direct from the pitches), and it’s very quiet – apart from the birds, which can be noisy… especially at dawn and dusk. There are no main roads nearby, and the place is not on a flight path so there’s nothing to disturb that birdsong or the peaceful vibe. Fruit trees and lots of space around each pod guarantee your privacy; you can simply lie back and daydream, or if you’d rather get active, there are games like swingball, badminton, Jenga and boules all free to use at the site. For more sedate pursuits, try the woodland walks through pretty leafy glades or have a meditative wander around the farm – there’s no need at all to get in the car and rush off sightseeing, although Alton Towers Resort (10 minutes’ drive) is something of a siren call for many families. Barbecues are allowed by your pitch, and you’ll also be within easy reach of convenience stores, a pub and takeaways in Rocester.

Local attractions

Top of your Staffordshire to-do list may be Alton Towers Resort (10 minutes’ drive), where you can spend your day trying the Nemesis Sub-Terra ride, braving the Master Blaster water coaster and watching the Teletubbies Big Band cavort on stage (maybe leave that one to the kids?). And talking of kids, they might also like to be mini-keepers for the day and look after rare animals at Peak Wildlife Park (15 minutes). Keen to feel the earth beneath your feet? It’s time for long hikes or cycle rides in the Peak District National Park (15 minutes), where you can follow the Tissington Trail from the cute village of Ashbourne, or explore the limestone ravine in Dovedale (both 20 minutes). There are family-friendly woodland walks around the nature reserve at Cotton Dell, as well as picnic spots and places to build dens for younger kids in the grounds of Ilam Park (both 20 minutes). And when your little darlings get tired, take the weight off their feet with a steam-train ride along the Churnet Valley Railway (15 minutes).
