View of the hardstanding pitches

General

  • Well-kept, family-run and friendly park on the Welsh border
  • Spectacular views of the surrounding countryside
  • On a seven-acre smallholding 15 miles from Chester

Ladies, gents, solo travellers, couples, kids and the dog have quite the pick of places to roam around when staying at popular Lady Willington Camping and Caravan Site near Whitchurch, as it's on the border of Wales, Cheshire and Shropshire with several days'/weeks' worth of activities and attractions in each.

There'll be a rather warm welcome on site too from Pam, Richard and the team, who take pride in making their family-run park somewhere guests want to come back to – you'll see what that means when you get there…

Lady Willington is on a refined, peaceful and well-maintained seven-acre smallholding, which comes with first-class vistas of the surrounding Shropshire countryside. The pitches are decently sized and all have their own water supply and electric; other amenities include a toilet and a shower, a washing up sink, a fridge and freezer, a kettle, a hairdryer, and a washing machine and dryer (small extra charge applies).

Barbecues are allowed on site: for supplies, the market town of Whitchurch is about 10 minutes' drive to the east, while Wrexham is about 15 minutes west.

Please note

Facilities/activities including use of washing machine and dryer are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

As with most campsites it gets busy between 8am and 10am. Hot water is available 24 hours a day so best to try and avoid this time for showering if possible. The facilities are new and are kept immaculately clean.

Amelia was lovely, very helpful. Everyone on site was very friendly, hot water in showers, campsite was small but quiet, clean and well planned. Toilets and showers were cleaned early and again throughout the day. Location wise is great if you drive out a little. We were only there 2 nights so didn’t get chance to walk out. Worth a drive to hamner and the mere was a lovely day out for the kids. I’m sure there’s much more if you have time to venture out.

    Disliked:

Not so much a dislike more of a heads up... no campfires allowed and toilet block is still working progress but clean and usable. Sinks could do with draining board.

Nice welcome. Small site. Surrounded by lovely views. Very clean toilets.

Nothing to do with the site itself - all public footpaths around the site were overgrown so could only walk down nearby lanes.

Small campsite situated in a nice area.
Plenty of room to pitch the tent.
    Owners nice and friendly.
Drinking water available right next to our tent.

    Disliked:

People staying in the lodges letting their dogs run free in the campsite a couple of times and on one occasion one dog ran into our tent.
New facilities for campers including showers and toilets but no restrictions for Covid-19 so people did not respect my space at the washing up area where there are two sinks next together.

Local attractions

This be Roman country: nearby Whitchurch was founded by the rampaging lot around the time of Caesar (the first), on a main Roman road between Chester and Wroxeter.

Chester, one of the main Roman towns, is about 40 minutes' drive from Lady Willington Camping and Caravan Site and has a Roman amphitheatre to see as well as Roman remains and a museum at Dewa Roman Experience. Fans of other history periods also come to Chester to see its medieval and black and white buildings and its Grade I listed city walls, among the best preserved city walls in Britain, and the 11th-century Chester Cathedral.

Back near base, stop off at the well-kept Whitchurch Heritage Centre to see some more Roman remains alongside exhibits and galleries taking the town up to modern times. Around the streets, make time too for the Clock Trail or one of the other several town trails: most fortuitously, most pass a pub…

Also anciently, several castles, historic houses and National Trust properties are within conquerable driving distance – Chirk Castle, Erddig Hall in Wrexham, Combermere Abbey, Cholmondeley Castle and Bolesworth Castle just to start you off. All have regular events, including an international show jumping event at Bolesworth, and a Pageant of Power, Pony Club Championships and garden openings at Cholmondeley.

Here to hike? Five long-distance walking trails start from Whitchurch's Jubilee Park, including the Shropshire Way which runs along to the Llangollen Canal, crossing the border between England and Wales. The Sandstone Trail, 34 miles through Cheshire and Shropshire, starts and finishes in the town.

Other sights and sites nearby are Shrewsbury and the follies at Hawkstone Park about 20 miles away, and the early nineteenth century Pontcysyllte Aqueduct carrying the Llangollen Canal over the River Dee, a World Heritage Site with the wondrous Horseshoe Falls. Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales, is about an hour and a quarter's drive away.
