  • Spacious pitches on a Shropshire farm a 15-minute drive from Oswestry
  • Shropshire Sculpture Park five minutes’ drive; Telford 40 minutes
  • Family- and dog-friendly site; pub and buses within a 20-minute walk
In rural Shropshire, 15 minutes’ drive from Oswestry, Red Oak Camping is a welcoming site on a family-run working cattle farm; the presence of resident animals at some sites often means that you can’t bring dogs, but happily that is not the case here, where your well-behaved four-legged companion will be a welcome guest (though bear in mind that there is an extra charge). There are assorted accommodation options here, and what unifies them all is the feeling of spaciousness and the utterly peaceful vibe – give or take the occasional lowing from the cows… Guests also benefit from such amenities as a toilet and shower block, an outdoor washing-up area and ice-pack freezing, as well as recycling points, chemical waste disposal and charging facilities for electric cars. Mind you, you might not need to recharge your car until the day you leave, since it only takes 20 minutes on foot to reach the village of West Felton, from where a bus service links to places such as Oswestry, Shrewsbury (25 minutes) and Telford (40 minutes). West Felton also has a pub serving food – that’s if you don’t fancy firing up the barbecue for dinner – and there’s another pub within a half-hour walk (or five minutes’ drive), on the Montgomery Canal, which runs through Shropshire and Powys and is a pretty spot for a post-lunch walk.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked We had a fantastic stay at Red Oak, 2nd year and its only got better. Facilities are absolutely spotless, new kitchen added this year with oven, hob and washing machine. A quiet site with lots of room for children to play safely. Rebecca, Dad and J are great hosts ensuring all guests are welcomed, have everything they need, very friendly and always check in before leaving each day.

We will definitely be back next year, thank you for a great time team Red Oak :)

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked This is the second time we have been to Red oaks , the site is lovely, great sized pitches, toilet and showers are spotless and the kitchen with fridge/freezer is a bonus. One of our poles snapped in our canopy and they went and found us some spare poles so we could put it up(thankyou). The owner comes round every morning to check everything is ok and everyone is so helpful and friendly. We will definitely be returning again next year 😊

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked A very clean site, toilets and showers were spotless.
They had a small shed with children’s toys which was a good idea and the kitchen area was well equipped with toaster and kettle and you could use the fridge freezer if you wished too.

FHU cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked This is a lovely site on a working farm in beautiful Shropshire countryside. The owners are very friendly. Currently there are two hard standing fully serviced pitches with the rest being on grass. The pitches are perfectly flat. The facilities consist of a full kitchen and washing machine with two showers and toilets, with the showers being electric with no timers and no additional charge. For the older kids there is wifi available, but we had such a good signal on EE network that we didn't need it. There is also good tv reception. When we stayed the facilities were unisex, but additional showers and toilets were on the point of completion during our stay. It's quiet and you will sleep well and you cannot hear the A5 at all. There are some great walks across the fields to reach the towpath of the Montgomery canal, and from there you can head towards the Navigation Inn in Maesbury (40 mins) or the Queens Head pub in Queens Head (50 mins). We recommend the Navigation for its excellent food, but check opening times. Closer still is the Punchbowl in West Felton centre (20 mins) along with a well stocked village store and bus stops to get you to either Oswestry or Shrewsbury every half hour. The final approach to the farm is single track, but there is passing places and we didn't have any issues. For children, the site provides play equipment free of charge and there is ample room for them.

Disliked A designated area for ball games would be preferred, as some children do get carried away and forget there are huge fields to play in. Not really a dislike, more an observation.

Local attractions

Shropshire Sculpture Park (five minutes’ drive) exhibits more than 100 artworks on the lush grounds of the British Ironwork Centre. They include the 13-foot Spoon Gorilla (made out of – you guessed it: spoons; upwards of 40,000 of them, donated by people all around the world) and a sculpture honouring police dogs. Dating from the 11th century, moated Whittington Castle (10 minutes) occupies a 12-acre site that is home to ducks, swans and other wildlife. Among the events organised at the castle are alfresco theatre performances, living history weekends and craft fairs. A northbound drive along the A5 takes you past the early 19th-century Chirk Aqueduct (25 minutes), whose arches stretch across the border between England and Wales, and all the way to Chirk Castle (half an hour). This National Trust property is home to a collection of decorative arts that includes a spectacular Japanese chest with mother-of-pearl details.
