Well-stocked fishing pond on site

  • Adults-only site outside Ellesmere, in Shropshire’s ‘Lake District’
  • A 25-minute drive from Llangollen and 35 minutes from Shrewsbury
  • Outdoor dog-washing station with warm water; well-stocked fishing pond
Just outside the Shropshire market town of Ellesmere and close to the border with Wales, Newnes Touring Caravan Park is a secure adults-only site on a working farm run by Robin and Jane. This dog-loving couple will also welcome your four-legged friend when you come to stay – just be sure to keep it on a lead at all times while on the farm and to clean up after it, of course. The touring pitches here have electric and water hook-up points, and night lights so you can find your way after a late night at the pub… By the way, the nearest watering hole is in town, where there are also several dining options, plus shops and supermarkets for stocking up on barbecue supplies. It's just over a mile to the town centre, along a mostly flat path. Other on-site amenities include three heated toilet/shower blocks (no freezing in your PJs while brushing your teeth here), including facilities for disabled guests. One of the toilet blocks has a washing-up area. Robin and Jane have thought about your canine companions too: should they get muddy on a woodland walk, you can shower them with warm water at the outdoor dog-washing station. Those who never travel without their fishing rod should be pleased to hear that there’s a well-stocked pond on site; others might prefer to explore the local area, which is known as ‘Shropshire’s Lake District’ thanks to its nine meres, or shallow lakes. They include The Mere (five minutes), with birdwatching and boat trips, and White Mere (10 minutes) and Cole Mere (15 minutes), with wooded walks and sailing clubs.

Powered cement/asphalt campsite

Liked Everything was perfect. Immaculate amenities on site and stunning views. Some sites have that ‘feeling good’ atmosphere, and Newnes certainly hit the spot! Our 2 dogs loved the walks round the site and the owners even mow round the outside of the sheep field to give a further walk. Site owners were so welcoming and kind. Only stayed 2 nights but could have easily stayed much longer.

Local attractions

The peaty, boggy habitat of Fenn’s, Whixall & Bettisfield Mosses National Nature Reserve (25 minutes’ drive) attracts assorted wildlife, from birds of prey and waders to lizards and colourful butterflies. There are far-reaching views of the wetlands from the top of the five-metre Mammoth Tower. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (25 minutes) was constructed in the early 1800s to allow the Llangollen branch of the Shropshire Union Canal to cross the River Dee. You’ll need a head for heights to stroll along its path, but there are splendid views of the Welsh countryside to be had from 38 metres above ground. And you might see a barge or two navigating the aqueduct’s waters… Built by the Romans, Chester (50 minutes) is surrounded by centuries-old defensive walls with elevated walkways. The city’s ancient heritage can also be seen at the Roman Amphitheatre and at the 12th-century Agricola Tower, a stone gateway with a frescoed chapel. Shropshire's county town of Shrewsbury (35 minutes) is worth a trip too, for a stroll around the castle and abbey and a boat trip along the River Severn.
