General
- Peaceful countryside site on the shores of a small fishing lake
- Five minutes’ drive from Ellesmere and 45 minutes from Chester
- Private hot tub, garden, barbecue area and fishing pegs
Reeling from daily life and desperately fishing for some peaceful hols? Catch a break at Gadlas Park Holiday Cabins, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Ellesmere.
On the shores of a carp fishing lake, this is a top spot for anyone casting about for a soothing Shropshire countryside stay. With private gardens – each kitted out with verandah, outdoor furniture, outdoor heater, outdoor shower and hot tub – and private fishing pegs, stays here are an easy way to slip the net and escape for a few days.
For larger bodies of water, it’s a short jaunt into nearby Ellesmere to stroll the pretty shores of the Mere, wander the Ellesmere Sculpture Trail, get out in a rowing boat or pedalo, or – with well-timed visits – call in to Heronwatch to keep an eye on nest building, hatching and feedings out on Moscow Island.
Back at base, cook up dinner in the fully-equipped (and private) kitchen or on the barbecue in the garden, then settle in for a quiet night on the verandah swing chair or bubbling in the hot tub for a bit of stargazing. A PS4 and Bose Bluetooth speaker are on hand too for evenings of gaming and/or tunes.
Prefer some company? There are plenty of pubs in Ellesmere where you can rub shoulder with locals.

Local attractions
Fancy gawking at some spectacular architecture? There’s plenty to spy half an hour's drive away at Hawkestone Park Follies, which was built as a fantasy theme park in the 18th century, and the spectacular Attingham Park (40 minutes). More functional (but still fancier than your average house) are Whittington Castle or Chirk Castle – both within 20 minutes; you might also catch a glimpse of a narrowboat crossing the towering Chirk or Pontcysyllte aqueducts.
Anyone drawn in by dabbling in history may wish to make the 50-minute trip to Ironbridge Gorge: the site’s got a bevy of historical attractions to explore, from a reconstructed Victorian town to the world’s first cast-iron bridge, built in 1779 to cross the Severn.
Build a bridge from past to present with a stop at the British Ironwork Centre, 20 minutes from base, where visitors can take part in blacksmithing, silversmithing and ceramics workshops, stroll the sculpture garden metal safari and mosey around the showrooms.
You could also get a glimpse of rural living by meeting the animals and helping to groom the horses at Park Hall Countryside Experience (15 minutes), or opt for the urban instead with a trip to Shrewsbury (40 minutes) or a day wandering the streets of Chester, 45 minutes from the site.
