How do you fancy holidaying in a hut? Cast images of garden sheds from your mind, for Hay and Hedgerow Glamping, a 10-minute drive from the Shropshire town of Bridgnorth has a far more glamorous proposal, in the shape of a shepherd’s hut. A shepherd’s hut, it has to be added, with a private terrace and views over parkland, woods and water.
It’s a comfy berth, so comfy in fact that any real shepherd would struggle to leave it and tend to his or her flock... but that’s by the bye, as the only job you’ll have here is relaxing and exploring the Shropshire countryside. Back at base, you can warm tired toes by the woodburner, or steam away in the ensuite hot shower before knocking up a warming casserole in the kitchen. On balmier evenings, barbecue feasts await on the outdoor terrace while you sip a glass of something chilled and watch the sun go down.
If you’ve a hankering for the bright lights of town, they’re twinkling for you in Bridgnorth, where there’s an abundance of restaurants, takeaways, pubs with food, and shops and supermarkets.
It'd be a shame to visit this pretty settlement on the Severn and just go shopping though: walk by the river, take the cliff railway to the castle ruins and if you like toots and whistles, a time travelling steam ride all the way to Kidderminster.

Local attractions
The UNESCO-listed Ironbridge is similarly handy, about a 10-minute car trip to tour a cluster of museums and attractions focusing on the area’s industrial heritage, as well as taking hikes through the gorge and fishing (with day permits) for barbell, bream and eels.
If you’re up for hikes on a grander scale, link up with the 139-mile Shropshire Way 15 minutes away in Much Wenlock; alternatively, the trails crisscrossing the limestone ridge of adjacent Wenlock Edge make for many satisfying wanders. The activity centre there can arrange further outdoor antics from quad biking and climbing to clay pigeon shooting.
Further afield, the heath-covered heights of Carding Mill Valley and the Shropshire Hills can be reached and ascended within a 40-minute drive, while at lower altitudes and about the same distance, the ancient oak stands of the Wyre Forest National Nature Reserve are home to butterflies and bats, muntjac deer and polecats.
Should you fancy a bit of history to go with your hikes, make the 15-minute trip to Dudmaston Hall, a handsome 17th-century pile with a hefty modern art collection and 3,000 acres of woods and gardens to walk, or take a 40-minute foray to Ludlow and its hilltop Norman castle for wanders and picnics with views.
