  • Back to basics grass pitches half a mile from the Thames Path
  • A 20-minute drive from Witney and 25 minutes from the Cotswolds
  • Working farm within walking distance of three pubs; campfires welcome
Stunning sunsets, campfires, wildlife spotting and strolls along the Thames: the list of what to expect at Thames Meadow Camping sounds sweeter and sweeter the more you hear. The peaceful, back to basics grass pitches are on a working farm just half a mile from the Thames Path, and they’re also within walking distance of three pubs (and many more if you want a good stomp – there are plenty of circular walks from the site that swing by the pub). Fires are a hot topic at Thames Meadow Camping too… you'll be able to light a blaze in brick surrounds, with views of the sheep, Red Ruby cattle and chickens grazing in the neighbouring fields. Campfire packs (including logs, kindling, newspaper and firelighters) are available to purchase on site. There are basic provisions up for grabs from the site’s 'honesty shed', which on most days stocks eggs from the site’s chickens, meat from their grass-fed cattle and sheep, local honey, preserves, sausages and bacon. Ice packs can be frozen in the shared freezer. Come prepared for well-maintained but back to basics facilities, including composting toilets and a cold-water washing-up station. There’s no electricity, so bring along your torches. It’s exactly the set-up you’ll need and want for days visiting local family-friendly attractions or marching over Cotswolds trails (from 25 minutes’ drive). The market town of Witney, with a brewery and lovely riverside, is 20 minutes’ drive away and Oxford is half an hour's drive away. And if you’re of an active disposition, launch a canoe or paddleboard directly onto the Thames just half a mile from the site. For your grocery shops, there’s a village shop within two miles, a slightly larger shop within four miles and supermarkets from 20 minutes’ drive. Well behaved, vaccinated dogs are very welcome when kept on a lead at all times. A dog walking paddock is available 200 metres away, available to book at an extra charge.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Exactly as advertised. Kids enjoyed romping on the field when it was sunny. When it was rainy there are plenty of things to do nearby.

Disliked: Logs could have been cheaper.

From the manager: Thanks for your lovely review Paul, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We do note your comment about the wood - we do try to keep all of our prices as low as possible, and hope this was reflected in the items in the honesty shop. The price of wood is at standard market rate for the quantity (a large sack) plus the kindling and fire lighters. Of course if we are able to reduce the price at any time due to lower costs to us we will do this. We hope to welcome you again James and Fi

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Facilities nice and straightforward. Compost toilet nicer than some "regular" toilets I've come across. Nice touches and decoration. Simple level field. Short walks to good pubs and Thames path, great for the dog. Hosts check that you're ok but don't pester and are accomodating. Small honesty shop with farm supplies and fire making kit. Would recommend. Thanks for having me and the dog! Great value at £15.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Loved this place. Basic BUT so well thought out as in what it supplies. Location is brilliant for thames, pubs, cycling, walking . Freezer available to use , small cute honestly shop and definitely a first for fresh flowers in a porta loo 🫶😝 Pitches are spacious, kids toys and activities dotted about and generally just soo cute .

Disliked: Nothing cept having to leave!

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Beautiful, quiet & simple with big pitches & fires - just how we like it. Fi & James are lovely and there are lots of lovely little touches that make this site different - flowers in the (spotlessly clean) compost loo, and a lovely 'trust' shop on the barn. Great pub 5 mins walk and easy access to the river. We loved it. Many thanks Chris & Sara

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked: Dad and Lad with a campervan, so we had all we needed. The minimal facilities were plenty sufficient for us. Nice to have a proper campfire on the ground too, instead of messing about with firebowls. Made it feel a bit more wild. Charming welcome from the farmer, too, checking all was well.

Helen M. The reviewer booked through Pitchup.com

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: If you want to stay in a quiet green meadow where you can lie down and watch the clouds and hear only the wind in the trees, then this is the perfect place. No fussy check-ins, very few other visitors - it felt like a secret oasis, a little hidden nook tucked away between the Cotswold hedges. We were using this as a base for visiting the local area, which is very busy during August, so this was a wonderful retreat at the end of the day.

Disliked: Obviously, some sort of shower would be good in the future, or even private washing facilities. Maybe a cubicle with a tap to fit with the rustic feel?

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks so much for taking the time to leave us such a lovely review Helen - we are really pleased you enjoyed your stay. This was our first year of opening, but shower/washing facilities are absolutely on our radar! I love the idea of a washing cubicle as an alternative/addition to showers - what a great idea. Watch this space! With thanks James & Fi

Local attractions

Full steam for activities on the water… in Newbridge (25 minutes’ walk), hire electric or pedal punts or a paddleboard. Anglers can get their fix within 10 minutes’ drive of the site. Hardwick Watersports (10 minutes’ drive) has the most elaborate list of options, including the likes of kayaking, waterskiing and wakeboarding. Canoeing expeditions can be organised for you straight from the campsite – just ask the owner for info. If you’re craving yet more active activities, head to the tennis club (half an hour’s walk), horse-riding centre (five minutes’ drive), golf courses (from 15 minutes) or nature reserves (15 minutes). Oxford (half an hour) calling? No wonder, with its punting activities, museums, castle and prison, open-top buses and shops. The Cotswolds (from 25 minutes’ drive) is yet another spot that’s hard to ignore, and the main question is where to go first: farm shops, a garden centre in nearby Burford (25 minutes), a Roman. Villa, model village or Stow-on-the-Wold (40 minutes)?
