  • Dog-friendly site with fishing lakes outside North Somercotes village
  • Cleethorpes half an hour’s drive; North Sea Observatory 40 minutes
  • Fishing pegs around the lake; tackle and bait shop
For a holiday that’s all about the meditative patience of fishing, cast your net (pun very much intended) no further than Pigeon Cottage, a welcoming, family-friendly site stretching across five green acres on the outskirts of the Lincolnshire village of North Somercotes. The site is well equipped for angling enthusiasts, featuring not one, but two peaceful lakes with a large number of fishing pegs on their shores – no slipping on muddy banks while trying to reel in the big one. And if you get no bites, you can still chill on your pontoon, watching the swimming ducks and taking in the splendid views of the countryside. There’s also a tackle and bait shop, in case you’ve forgotten a vital element of your kit. At the end of your fishing day, head to the on-site bar which is usually open on Fridays and Saturdays. Otherwise, light up the barbecue and relax. You can pick up takeaway bites on site or head into the village (five minutes’ walk), where a couple of pubs serve home-cooked food and real ales. There’s good news for fishing widows and widowers, too, since they can explore the rather splendid surrounds, starting with a spot of wildlife watching at the Donna Nook Grey Seal Colony (five minutes’ drive) or at Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve, an area of mudflats and sand dunes that’s popular with migrating birds. Dogs are welcome at the site, which has male and female facilities, plus chemical disposal points.

Liked: People friendly

Disliked: On arrival we were plonked on some gravel overlooking the pond About 3 metres from the pub where everyone congregated The first night it was Karaoke until 12-30 am with people practically standing next to the caravan Next afternoon it was a lovely day which brought youngest with tinnies gathered with a couple fishing, a lot of noise Sunday brought droves of kids for the Easter egg hunt, they might as well of put us in the car park it would of been quieter, then everyone stayed on for another round of karaoke Our electricity was on an extension lead plugged into the pub mains Needless to say we will not be returning All very stressful ,, this is definitely not the site for people wanting a quiet life

From the manager: Thank you for your feed back it is very much appreciated. I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy your stay with us. Your caravan was parked just on the edge of the grass instead of on the grass, this was because the water in the pond hadn't reseeded enough and we had to close part of the grass section off to stop people falling in the pond. However I did ask you if you wanted to be moved to the other end of the site, but Steve said you were alright where you were. Like I have said previously you didn't have to stay where you were, we did offer an alterative pitch (you would also have been received a refund on the price of your pitch) The bar is open Friday and Saturday and everyone on site are very welcome to call in. Our site is a family site and we have an Easter Egg Hunt every year and we encourage everyone on site to join in. We have an electric box for the 2 caravan pitches that are next to the bar, it is separate from the bar mains. I don't understand why having a cable from there to the caravan is a problem. If you had moved to another pitch on the site it would have been a lot quieter for you. Thank you again for your review

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Hot water in the utility room. The area. Flat pitch.

Disliked: Far too many pitches, too close together. Only 2 toilets, both had the shower in, so you could be waiting an age for the loo. Toilet block/showers could do with a good clean. Hot water limited to 2hrs am & 2hrs pm. Not enough bins, the one they have was crawling with maggots! The "bar" on site is cash only (fishing and alcohol isn't a good mix in my opinion) The utility room (2 sinks) needs to be checked more often, there were food remnants in both sinks and plug holes were blocked.

From the manager: Hello, Martin & Teresa, Thank you for all your comments we do appreciate them. Firstly let me start by saying this bank holiday was an unusually busy one for us, partly due to us having a charity event on the Saturday and a children's fishing match on the Sunday, which men't that we had more people on site than we would have normally. The council have told us that we have the right amount of showers and toilet facilities on our site, and we have 3 showers and 3 toilets not 2. We tried our best to check the toilets frequently but due to the events going on over the weekend we couldn't check them as often as we would normally, as their are only 2 of us looking after the whole site. The hot water is on from 6am to 7pm every day. If you saw a bin with maggots in it why didn't you tell us? we might have been able to clean the bin out if we had known about it. We have 10 bins on site and due to their being so many people on site this bank holiday, the bins filled up really quickly. We couldn't get them emptied until the Monday due to it being a bank holiday. Due to us having poor internet reception because of the weather and various other things, it would be a waste of time having a card machine, that is why it is a cash only bar & site. As I have said previously it was an unusually busy bank holiday weekend. If no one tells us something needs doing ie cleaning food out of a plug hole how are we supposed to know ? I am very glad that you liked the hot water in the utility room, the area and the flat pitch. Kind Regards Sue

Primitive grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: Site was quiet at nights.

Disliked: Our pitch was on grass next to the elsan disposal point. The showers were only available with hot water from 7:30 a.m to 10:30 a.m and at similar times in the early evening. The showers were not particularly clean and had no independent temperature control (were very hot). There is a bar area at the bottom (entrance) of the site which had events with music that could be heard from our position, about 1/2way up the site. There is no provision for rubbish/recycling disposal.

From the manager: Good morning Paul, Thank you for your review it is very much appreciated. I'm glad to see that you enjoyed the quiet nights. This bank holiday was exceptionally busy due to us having our usual Bike night on the Thursday, our monthly Classic Car Night on the Friday and a Charity day on the Saturday, having said that the music is always turned down at 11pm. Yes your pitch was next to the elsan tank which had been emptied 2 days previous, the elsan tank does not give off any bad smells even when it hasn't been emptied, if it did we wouldn't let people camp near it. If you weren't happy with your pitch you should have said something to us and we would have put you somewhere else. The hot water in the showers are from 6am to 7pm every day. Due to us being exceptionally busy over the Bank Holiday weekend and only 2 of us doing everything, we just didn't have the time to keep checking the showers and toilets as much as we would normally, so if anything needed cleaning we would exspect people to tell us so that we can do something about it. We do have warning signs next to every sink and shower to tell people that the water may be hot, this is due to a build up of lime scale in the pipes because we have hard water. On site we have 10 bins, at the (entrance) near the bar we have 4 recycling bins and a Big red bin, these are in clear view. Kind Regards Sue

Local attractions

Hiking trails in the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (25 minutes’ drive) take in chalk hills, rolling fields and lush woodlands. Local attractions include the grasslands of Red Hill Nature Reserve, with orchids and butterflies, and the country park at Hubbards Hills, on the River Lud. The place to have a go at paddleboarding or kayaking, Cleethorpes (half an hour) has a long beach where the kids can build sandcastles, go on donkey rides or paddle in the shallow water. Younger children might prefer the paddling pool or a trip on the Lollipop Road Train. And don’t forget to sample some fish and chips on the lively seafront. Binoculars for birdwatching are provided at the café of the North Sea Observatory (40 minutes), a strikingly modern building overlooking the beach and the multicoloured huts at Chapel Point. A walk along the beach takes you to Anderby Creek, where sand dunes provide a home for breeding birds like oystercatchers.
