  • Adults-only site with touring pitches 15 minutes’ drive from Lincoln
  • Doddington Hall & Gardens 10 minutes’ drive; Newark 25 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; five minutes’ drive from a village pub
Leave the children at home (supervised, of course…), but be sure to bring your canine companion for a holiday at Plots Farm Caravan and Camping, an adults-only site in rural surroundings 15 minutes’ drive from Lincoln. And why should you bring your dog? Well, the site is less than a five-minute walk from a dog trainer who offers (among other things) guided walks and breed-specific socials – just the thing to keep your four-legged buddy exercised and waggy of tail. There are also several green areas that welcome dogs (on leads) in the vicinity, including Whisby Nature Park, a designated dragonfly hotspot with hiking trails; Spalford Warren, where you might spot the resident woodpeckers; and Besthorpe Nature Reserve, a former industrial site with wetlands and ponds inhabited by cormorants and otters. All three are about 10 minutes’ drive away. In addition to spacious hardstanding and grass touring pitches (with optional electric hook-up), Plots Farm has well-maintained toilets and hot showers, a washing-up area and a launderette. There are also fresh water points and waste-disposal facilities. The nearest farm shop is a 10-minute drive away (or you can stock up on groceries in Lincoln), and the nearest pub is in the village of Eagle (five minutes). Activities in the local area include angling and golfing (with several fishing camps and golf courses within a half-hour drive) and watersports at Apex Lake (15 minutes).

Local attractions

Doddington Hall & Gardens (10 minutes’ drive), built during the late reign of Queen Elizabeth I, has an expansive network of (dog-friendly) estate trails, as well as padel courts. The West Garden is a riot of colour during the summer season, and the site also runs a lively calendar of events, from open-air theatre to jazz sessions. In Lincoln (15 minutes), the 11th-century cathedral and castle sit facing each other, separated only by two gates and a short walk. From there, make your way down Steep Hill (so named with good reason: it has a 14% gradient), stopping at various independent shops and cafés. On the outskirts of Newark (25 minutes), the Newark Air Museum has a rich collection of vintage and modern aircraft. There are pleasant walks along the River Trent and views of the Newark Castle ruins from Riverside Park. The National Civil War Centre - Newark Museum explores the history of this 17th-century conflict.
