  • Farm hideaway adjacent to an operational airfield in Lincolnshire
  • Next to RAF Coningsby; a 10-minute drive to Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre
  • Plane spotting on site; farm shop and pub within five minutes’ drive
Vulcan Rest is a red-hot spot for plane spotters and war history lovers. A rural Lincolnshire hideaway on a working farm, it has a very big surprise next door: the operational airfield at RAF Coningsby, which is home to Typhoon jets, Tornadoes and, once upon a time, the legendary Vulcan bomber. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (Lancaster Bomber, Spitfire, Hurricane & Dakota) is still operational so you may well spot them as they fly over the site on a weekly basis. You can also tour The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitors Centre (10 minutes’ drive) and check out the Dambusters Memorial in nearby Woodhall Spa. Simple on-site amenities include a fresh water supply and a single toilet and basin. To keep you fed and watered, the local farm shop is stocked with essentials for full English breakfasts as well as barbecue goodies and picnic treats – they even offer a delivery service to the site so you don’t have to stir once you get comfy. There’s a 15th-century pub with a suntrap beer garden a mile away from the campsite, plus shops and takeaways, while Coningsby (five minutes' drive away) turns up several restaurants and other places to eat. For dreary days, the Kinema in the Woods in Woodhall Spa (15 minutes) shows blockbuster films in a 1920s cinema.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Free air show (subject to being in the right place at the right time).
Only 'The Nook' campsite at RAF Mildenhall is closer to an active military airfield, AFAIK.
Farm shop a mile up the road.
Peace and quiet (when the RAF weren't flying).

Disliked: The electric power points have a rotary switch, which isn't obvious at first.
Grey & unused water disposal point not obvious, so you have to use your initiative.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Small quiet site (Apart from aircraft sounds) on the side of the runway. Town of Coningsby 10 min walk with pubs, restaurants and shops. Clean toilet and bins for different items. We met the owner, who was at site when we arrived and had the choice of pitches.

Disliked: Northing

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Right next to the runway, easy access into Cosford following the farm track through the farm. It only has a toilet and basin in a shed so be prepared. It does have elsan point, water and electricity but Makesure you have a long cable.

Disliked: Not a dislike for us but if you don’t like noisy planes prob not the site for you.

From the manager: Hello Peter,

Thankyou for your review.

As it states on Pitch Up we are a basic, no frills Campsite, listing the facilities we do offer.

I am very confused about your comment that you have stated that you had No contact with the owner (i.e myself) as I had messaged you on the 26th September, Thanking you for your booking and asking for your arrival time, to which you replied.
I went on to inform you that I would be sending a text message later that evening regarding directions and Pitch number which I fulfilled.

I then received a text message from you on the 27th September informing me that you had driven past the Campsite and had ended up at the crossroads further along than the road. I then redirected you to the Campsite.

I came down to the Campsite to do the Meet and Greets with all the Campers staying and unfortunately you were not on site when I arrived.
So I sent you a text message later on that evening explaining that I was sorry I had missed you as you were not on site when I came down and I wished that you a good day at the BBMF Members Day event which was taking place the following day and that you were attending.

So, I had sent 3 different text messages to which I had no response from you.

With regards to your comment about the poor quality of the access road, unfortunately it does not belong to us, it belongs to the Farmer who owns all the fields that surround the Campsite.

Liked: What a great place to view the planes coming and going, we also saw the Lancaster Bomber take off for Belgium. The toilet block was always kept clean, we will definitely be going back. Dawn very easy to deal with and made a great recommendation for somewhere to eat.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Right by the runway. Perfect for plane spotting. Great raised platform for it too. Just a shame nothing was flying this weekend 😄.
Having only 5 pitches also pretty much garauntees a peaceful break

Disliked: Lack of shower facility and extremely basic toilet facilities. For £30 per night I’d usually hope for a little more but still think it’s great

Local attractions

Hot foot it to The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitors Centre (five minutes’ drive) for guided tours of the flight hangars, and visit the solemn Dambusters Memorial in Woodhall Spa, which commemorates 617 Squadron. Petwood Hotel (both 15 minutes) was the squadron’s Officers’ Mess in World War II, and you can see a dummy bouncing bomb in the grounds. The Blue Bell Inn (10 minutes) is a famed haunt of the 617 'Dambusters' and 627 squadrons who were based at RAF Woodhall Spa and billeted to Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre (10 minutes) during World War II. Look up at the beamed ceilings to see their signatures and the pennies they placed there for their next pint after the air raids. Other war-themed museums in the area include the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre (20 minutes), Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre (half an hour) and the International Bomber Command Centre (45 minutes), so there’s lots to keep historians busy. Travelling with the kids? Head for the fairground rides at Skegness and Ingoldmells (both 45 minutes), the dune-backed sands at Mablethorpe or the quiet beach at Sutton on Sea (both 55 minutes). You’re covered for rainy days too: the Kinema in the Woods in Woodhall Spa (15 minutes) shows blockbuster films in a 1920s cinema.
