Vulcan Rest: Touring pitches

General

  • Farm hideaway adjacent to an operational airfield in Lincolnshire
  • Next to RAF Coningsby; a 10-minute drive to Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre
  • Plane spotting on site; farm sho and pub within five minutes’ drive

Vulcan Rest is a red-hot spot for plane spotters and war history lovers. A rural Lincolnshire hideaway on a working farm, it has a very big surprise next door: the operational airfield at RAF Coningsby, which is home to Typhoon jets, Tornadoes and, once upon a time, the legendary Vulcan bomber.

The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (Lancaster Bomber, Spitfire, Hurricane & Dakota) is still operational so you may well spot them as they fly over the site on a weekly basis. You can also tour The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitors Centre (10 minutes’ drive) and check out the Dambusters Memorial in nearby Woodhall Spa.

Simple on-site amenities include a fresh water supply and a single toilet and basin. To keep you fed and watered, the local farm shop is stocked with essentials for full English breakfasts as well as barbecue goodies and picnic treats – they even offer a delivery service to the site so you don’t have to stir once you get comfy.

There’s a 15th-century pub with a suntrap beer garden a mile away from the campsite, plus shops and takeaways, while Tattershall (10 minutes) turns up several restaurants and other places to eat.

Families can let off steam on the inflatables at Tattershall Lakes Water Park (10 minutes), and there’s fishing on an adjacent lake. For dreary days, the Kinema in the Woods in Woodhall Spa (15 minutes) shows blockbuster films in a 1920s cinema.

Beautiful views of fields and we were fortunate enough to catch Dambuster and spitfire landing and taking off on sat and sun). Safe place for kids to wander around fields. During evening walk we stumbled upon a historic pub built in 17th century where dambuster heroes used to drink and dine and yeah you get to see sheeps, horses, etc on the way which brought big smile to my city boys! Its a basic site with full mobile coverage, single clean toilet with cold water tap in sink, outside drinking water tap and car parked next to good big size pitch . Owner Dawn was lovely, she messaged me before the visit with all the information and took time to visit us to see if everything was okay. That was a lovely gesture the. Thank You Dawn!!. Will be definitely coming back during weekdays to catch the mighty Typhoons.
Also, there is a Co-Op at gas station and a lovely Farm shop a mile away.

Outstanding to watch the plane's day and night. Local amenities nearby. Basic site with toilet and sink but perfectly fine if you’re capable of looking after yourself.
Taking away the planes it’s calm and peaceful/tranquil place with field views.

Nice little camp site, I believe just 5 pitches so perfect for a bit of less crowded sites. Toilet & running water only but this reflects the lower price. (Was even toilet roll & hand sanitiser privided)
The site is next to an operational RAF airbase so if u are lucky like I was, you get to see jets flying & doing acrobatics!
There is even an elevated viewing platform to view the jets.
New subs have been planted adjacent to one side of the site which will provide more wind cover.

    Disliked:

This is really nit picking, the pitch numbers could be better marked as I couldn't see mine on arrival.

No light in toilet. No hot water. Toilet very basic. No shower. Now pot wash sink.
When you pay £20 + you expect more.

From the manager...

Thankyou John for your informative review and for taking the time.

On Pitch Up within the listing, it isn't stated that we have Hot water, a Shower or a Pot - Wash Sink but it does state that the amenities are very simple.
However since you brought your own touring caravan to stay in, I would have presumed that you would have had these onboard your own accommodation.

You paid £20.00 per night with ehu which was the rate at the time you made your booking.

We firmly believe that the experience of staying on a Campsite, 200 metres from the perimeter fence of an operational Airfield/Runway which is home to the Typhoon Jets and Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, is a small price to pay for the experience that is on offer.

Kind Regards

Dawn

My boys LOVED this campsite and can't wait to go again to watch the aeroplanes taking off from RAF Coningsby. It was just a 15-minute to several shops and good pubs/restaurants. We also walked to Tattershall Castle which was beautiful and well worth a visit. We've bought our first radio receiver and can't wait to get back to use it at Vulcan Rest!

Yes it turned from a 1x Night stay to a 3x Night stay in the finish, didn't it !!

We are thrilled your boys enjoyed watching the Typhoons taking off during your stay and look forward to welcoming you back to Vulcan Rest in the Summer along with the radio receiver.

Local attractions

Hot foot it to The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Visitors Centre (five minutes’ drive) for guided tours of the flight hangars, and visit the solemn Dambusters Memorial in Woodhall Spa, which commemorates 617 Squadron. Petwood Hotel (both 15 minutes) was the squadron’s Officers’ Mess in World War II, and you can see a dummy bouncing bomb in the grounds.

Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre (10 minutes) relates the story of the Dambusters. Other war-themed museums in the area include the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre (20 minutes), Metheringham Airfield Visitor Centre (half an hour) and the International Bomber Command Centre (45 minutes), so there’s lots to keep historians busy.

Travelling with the kids? They can let off steam on inflatables at Tattershall Lakes Water Park (10 minutes), and head for the fairground rides at Skegness and Ingoldmells (both 45 minutes), the dune-backed sands at Mablethorpe or the quiet beach at Sutton on Sea (both 55 minutes). You’re covered for rainy days too: the Kinema in the Woods in Woodhall Spa (15 minutes) shows blockbuster films in a 1920s cinema.
