  • Tranquil pop-up meadow site on a farm in the gorgeous Welland Valley
  • A half-hour drive to Rutland Water, and 15 minutes to Uppingham
  • Wild camping field surrounded by woodland, close to shops and pubs
Set on a secluded eight-acre meadow on a working farm in the Welland Valley, the Grassy Shire is a secluded South Leicestershire campsite with spacious grass pitches – and it’s not just for hobbits; couples, families and their dogs are all welcome too. If you’re after a basic and peaceful site with lots of stuff to do locally, this could be the spot for you. The rustling of leafy trees around the camping field is a restful summer experience, and if you’re quiet on site, you might discover all sorts of wildlife in hedgerows and along the stream that meanders through the field. Local roads are generally quiet and suitable for family cycling – and there’s plenty of local footpaths leading you through spectacular landscapes. The level pitches are generous so you’ll have no issues with privacy, and pop-up facilities include toilets and a mains drinking-water supply as well as rubbish and recycling bins. There’s parking space next to your tent, and there’s easy access to the fields from the adjoining unclassified road. Barbecues are allowed on site and you can pick up basics in Medbourne if you want to spark up the grill. Beef, lamb and pork products can also be purchased directly from the farm. There are a couple of pubs there too, and you’ll find family-friendly pubs in Hallaton and Weston by Welland (all five minutes’ drive).

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Brilliant no thrills spot; park up and get the barbeque going. It's a perfect place to get away from the city. Toilets and water available. More than a few brilliant pubs nearby too

Disliked: Nothing.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Loved how small and quite the campsite was, with 3 boys all with additional needs they could get on and have some freedom to explore. Portable toilets where clean, good mobile reception.

Disliked: Grass was long other than the pitching areas which made it a little difficult for the boys to play without getting stung by stingy nettles. Hasn't put us off coming back.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Well layed out and space between pitches very good, toilets cleaned daily and meat delivery to pitch

Disliked: No shower block, these can be hired and easily plumbed in.

From the manager: Thank you for staying with us - we are glad you enjoyed it. We have looked at hiring showers but unfortunately they are very expensive and require either a robust mains electricity connection or very large generators. We hope that you can stay again next year!

Local attractions

There are several delightful and historic market towns to explore round and about, from the mellow-stone charm of Uppingham (15 minutes) and its boutique-lined town square, to the medieval architecture of Oakham (25 minutes). Stamford (half an hour) has plenty of Georgian buildings as well as a busy Friday market and riverside walks. You can also up the cultural ante with opera concerts at Nevill Holt Opera (10 minutes), set to the backdrop of a sprawling Elizabethan mansion. Have a potter around Lyddington Bede House (15 minutes) and its herb garden, tour the elaborate state rooms at Kirby Hall (20 minutes), or learn about WWII history at Armourgeddon Military Museum (half an hour), with its display of military weaponry and tanks. If being out in quiet countryside is rather more your scene, Rutland Water Nature Reserve is a one-stop destination for golfers, anglers and walkers, while you can let the kids burn off some energy on the floating inflatable courses at Aqua Park Rutland or have a scenic chug across the lake from Rutland Water Cruises (all half an hour).
