  • Cosy shepherd's hut on a National Trust farm site in Herefordshire
  • A 45-minute drive from the Brecon Beacons; near the Offa’s Dyke Path
  • Patios with a firepit and grill; buy farm eggs and meat on site
Stylish and cosy are the nests on this 300-acre National Trust farm… Dexter cattle, free-range chickens and arable crops already potter around this place, but you’ll be next in line for this delicious retreat on the border between Herefordshire and Wales. Hiking’s particularly tasty from here, as the site is just off the lengthy Offa’s Dyke Path and 45 minutes from the Brecon Beacons National Park (or for those literary fans among you, it’s a 15-minute drive from the Hay-on-Wye’s bookshops and cafés). As the name suggests, this is a natural nest surrounded by the Herefordshire countryside. As for the sticks and stones that make these shepherd’s huts so cosy, there’s underfloor heating, a television with a DVD player and a bathroom with a walk-in electric shower. For a timely solution to your hunger pangs, each hut has a fully-equipped kitchen for meal prep too. Step out of the stable door and you’ll be in a planted garden with pots and a two-tiered patio. There’s a seating area, firepit and grill ready for some alfresco dining… perhaps pair it with a glass of your favourite red, if you may, or pick up some free-range eggs and home-reared pedigree Dexter beef on site. Whenever you fancy veering off elsewhere, there are several pubs, a shop and restaurants along the river Wye where the food prep part will be sorted out for you.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: The shepherd's hut is cosy and beautiful, and the hosts Nick and Nikki are lovely. They have thought of everything, with lots of nice little touches. Birdsong is everywhere, there are two very friendly farm dogs, and we had fresh eggs from the hens for breakfast. It's an easy drive from Hay-On-Wye and we enjoyed eating dinner outside, then toasting marshmallows over the fire, and watching the bats as dusk fell. My 12-year-old daughter absolutely loved it and wants to go back. Highly recommend.

Local attractions

Once you’ve holed up in your new den, you might be thinking of stretching your legs after your journey. If so, there are lakeside walks (or pedalos to put your leg muscles to some light work) at Llangorse Lake (35 minutes’ drive). Radnor Forest (35 minutes) is another place with blood-pumping potential, whether that's hikes past waterfalls or kicking up some dust on the mountain biking trails. Up on the flat summit of Hay Bluff (half an hour), this hike will deliver some more splendid views… and there are more peaks ready for the taking in the Brecon Beacons National Park (45 minutes), including the Black Mountains (an hour and a half), where there are pony treks for those of you looking to give your feet a rest. While hiking’s certainly a breeze to find around here, that’s not all you’ll have to do. Perhaps you fancy a spot of coarse or salmon fishing on the River Wye (10 minutes), followed by a paddle in a canoe? The buzz of an event in the Royal Welsh Showground (40 minutes) or race day in Hereford (40 minutes)? Hereford has a cathedral and Builth Wells (40 minutes) has more on the historical front, including a castle and ancient church ruins.
