  • Peaceful and spacious working farm site five miles from Ross-on-Wye
  • Bus service to Ross-on-Wye and Hereford from near the site entrance
  • Kayaking and fishing at the River Wye, a short walk from the site
Pitch up here for a peaceful farm stay in a rural Herefordshire location: Oakleigh Campsite is a spacious and quiet site less than half a mile from the River Wye for angling and kayaking. Other outdoorsy options are around these parts too: walking and cycling is a particularly popular pursuit, with lots of routes accessible direct from the site, and the spectacular Wye Valley, Forest Of Dean, Symonds Yat and the Malvern Hills are within easy reach. Handily, Oakleigh is also three miles from the tourist town of Ross-on-Wye, to which you can catch a bus from almost right outside the site, as well as to the cathedral city of Hereford. For food and good ales, you’re within wobbly walking distance of the local dog-friendly pub, which is famed in the local area for serving good meals and having meticulously maintained beer lines. More eating options are over in Ross-on-Wye, or you can pick up self-catering supplies for barbecues back at base. Pitches at the farm are set on grass, in a spacious field with oodles of room for running around in, and amenities include a sanitary block with toilets and showers, plus a washing-up area.

Local attractions

If you’re of the outdoorsy persuasion, this site’s rural locale will be well suited to you indeed: kayaking and fishing are a short walk away from the site down at the River Wye, while climbing, canoeing and paddleboarding are popular pursuits over at Symonds Yat Rock; also stick around here to take in the splendiferous views out over the Wye valley, or bring your binoculars to for a spot of birdwatching there. Other outdoor-based activities in the vicinity include pony trekking in Bream, archery and clay pigeon shooting in St Briavels, and golfing at one (or both) of two courses in Coleford. Take the tiddlers over to the Forest of Dean for clambering and swinging around the high ropes courses over at Go Ape, or adventures around the walking trails and tangled trees of the 14-acre forest of Puzzlewood – they might get rather excited when they find out that this is where bits of screen hits such as Dr Who and Star Wars have been filmed. The historic sights of Hereford cathedral city are an easy 30-minute drive away, and plenty of other heritage spots lie around these parts too, such as the National Trust-managed Berrington Hall, Brockhampton Estate and Croft Castle.
