  • Seven-acre family-run site between Newent and Ross-on-Wye
  • Small village shop and pub within a mile; access to woodland walks
  • Play area, football, games room and stone-baked pizzas
It might be a small site, but there's plenty to do for families at and around Haywood Farm Caravan and Camping Park, 15 minutes' drive away from Ross-on-Wye. First up, there's fishing within a couple of miles of the site. Second, there's the scenic and spacious setting (check out the site pics) with a small pond, a play area, a football pitch and a large games room. Woodland walks are directly accessible from the site, as Haywood is close to Queens Wood on the edge of the Forest of Dean; and canoeing, kayaking, fishing, golf, horse riding, an indoor pool, mountain biking and tennis are all available in the surrounding countryside. Haywood Farm Caravan and Camping Park is family-run and dog-friendly. It's a short drive from the M50, between Newent and Ross-on-Wye, and has a nice range of amenities, including modern shower and toilet facilities with an accessible bathroom and a washing-up area, recycling point and chemical waste disposal point. Pick up essentials at the small on-site shop and make sure to save room in your stomach for the site's popular stone-baked pizzas. Pubs, restaurants, shops and public transport are 10 minutes' walk away.

Powered grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely friendly site, clean toilets, showers and washing up area. Good level pitches with 10 amp power connections. Great pizzas. Location good for exploring the Wye Valley. Games room and play area a big hit with the kids.

Disliked Unfortunately no planned activities during the school holiday weekdays. A bit too far to walk to pub with young children.

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Lovely site, very friendly hosts. Very friendly fellow campers. Fantastic fresh pizzas and truly a very large, beautiful forest walk a minute or two away. For the size of the site the on site amenities for families were great along with staff ran activities for the children ( we were just a couple, no children but appreciated such things make for a happy site ).

Disliked Very very little, a short wait for a shower in the morning, there were a number of separate clean shower rooms with sinks, but maybe two or three too few in the high season, same for the ladies toilets. Luck of the draw maybe but more an observation than criticism.

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Friendly staff, pitch size, facilities, cleanliness, showers, shop, games room, play park, woods, location.

This being our second visit to the site it was as good, if not better than the first. It's a nice, compact site with plenty to keep the kids occupied - games room, play park, playing field and a woods to explore. This time, there are even organised activities for the kids including a nature ramble and art & crafts.

Disliked The bumpy lane as you approach the site could do with resurfacing, but apart from that, nothing else!

Local attractions

Woodland walks are seconds from the farm, and four golf courses are within a three-mile radius. Sports centres and swimming pools are a short drive away. The Malvern Hills and the Brecon Beacons are probably the most visited destinations around this part of the England/Wales border, but plenty of other popular picks are around, like canoeing on the River Wye, wandering around the town of Ross-on-Wye, or fishing on the local lakes. Pottering around the Forest of Dean is another decent day out: if you're going forestwards, take time to stop off at the ancient woodland site of Puzzlewood and then the Clearwell Caves, mined for thousands of years to extract iron ore and now set up as a mining museum. (It should also be pointed out, just because, that some Doctor Who episodes were filmed here.) Within driving distance, both Monmouth and Malvern towns are 20 minutes away, and the cities of Hereford and Gloucester within 25. For a properly rural day out, make haste for Newbridge Farm Park (15 minutes' drive) or Raglan Farm Park (40 minutes).
