  • Small, peaceful site just outside Sutton St Nicholas
  • A 15-minute drive from Hereford; buses stop just by the site
  • Footpaths all around the site; pub a 10-minute walk away
Heading for Herefordshire and hoping for plenty of peace, places to walk and perhaps a pub trip or two? Camping in Frankland, just under a mile from Sutton St Nicholas, could well be the place to pitch up. This is a petite rural site with views out over neighbouring farmland and woods, and easy access to country lanes for rambling along (with a canine companion if you happen to have one who’d like to come along on your break). Handily for those whose walks aren’t complete without the reward of a pint at the end, it also happens to have a pub a 10-minute stroll away serving up a fine array of drinks and meals. If you’re more in the mood for alfresco eats, there are a few barbecues and firepits that are free to use (although they may have to be rotated if more than one group want to use them); forward planners can stash their food in the guest fridge or freezer until it's time to cook. There’s a play area and free wifi connection on site to keep the nippers busy while prep takes place, and it’s a short walk to the toilet/shower block and washing-up area to get yourselves and your kit all cleaned up too. Once you’ve strolled along local paths, set your sights a little further afield for walks in the Black Mountains and Malvern Hills or canoe trips along the River Wye from Hereford, 15 minutes’ drive away. Buses kindly stop just outside the site for folk who’d like to leave the car behind for the day. Please note this is a quiet site that is not suitable for young groups.

Local attractions

Start your hols by heading in to Hereford (15 minutes’ drive) for historic attractions including the cathedral, Black and White House Museum and the ancient scrolls of the Mappa Mundi exhibition. Continue your day by paddling a canoe down the River Wye or getting a thirst on at the Cider Museum (followed by a pint of the good stuff in a local pub, of course). For more town-based trips, head to Hay-on-Wye for all things book-related, aim for Abergavenny and its many foodie treats or wend your way to Worcester for racing, cricket and another handsome cathedral. All are around 45 minutes away by car. If you’d rather keep it country, fill your days with animal encounters at Newbridge Farm Park (20 minutes’ drive), Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo (35 minutes) and the International Centre for Birds of Prey (40 minutes), or plan visits to Hampton Court Castle (10 minutes) and Eastnor Castle (half an hour).
